Everyone is incredibly excited about the upcoming movie adaptation of Project Hail Mary. Since the announcement, anticipation has been building steadily, and naturally, many actors wanted to be a part of it. Some actors are so talented they can convincingly play almost any role, so it’s not unusual to see them pop up in unexpected genres. However, a recent cameo appearance really surprised viewers – though perhaps it shouldn’t have, given the actor’s legendary status.
If the computerized voice of Rocky in Project Hail Mary seemed recognizable, there’s a good reason: it was Meryl Streep! At first, Rocky communicates with sounds like whale songs, making it difficult for Ryland to understand him. However, they eventually learn to communicate when Ryland creates a computerized voice for Rocky. Director Phil Miller told Entertainment Weekly that the idea to cast Streep came about when someone wondered, “Wouldn’t it be fun to get Meryl Streep?” and Ryan (presumably the film’s producer or another key figure) simply replied, “She can do anything,” which proved to be exactly right.
It Was a Once-in-a-Lifetime Role

Miller explained how they convinced Meryl Streep to join the project. Amy Pascal, a producer on the film who had worked with Streep before on movies like The Post, used her existing relationship to ask her. That was all it took! Streep was enthusiastic about playing what Miller described as “a rejected voice of an alien,” even asking what else she could try. Miller said Streep was incredibly fun, thoughtful, and playful, recording numerous different takes.
In the science fiction thriller Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a former teacher who wakes up on a spaceship far from Earth with complete amnesia. As his memories return, he learns he’s on a desperate mission to figure out why the sun is fading—a phenomenon that could wipe out life on Earth. Relying on his scientific expertise, Ryland must save the planet, and he discovers he has an unlikely ally who gives him hope along the way.
