A small error in the novel Project Hail Mary has been noticed and criticized by scientists and researchers.
The new sci-fi movie, released in March, centers around Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), who finds himself waking up alone on a spaceship. As his memories return, he learns he’s on a critical mission to save Earth’s sun from a strange and dangerous substance. During his research, a mistake with his equipment – running two test tubes at once – causes an unstable centrifuge.
Project Hail Mary’s Unbalanced Centrifuge Bothers The Entire Science & Research Community
The depiction of a centrifuge in the book Project Hail Mary sparked discussion among scientists online. Many took to social media to point out that the way it was shown doesn’t align with standard laboratory practices. For example, one Instagram user, @scientistwhoreads, posted a video demonstrating how a properly balanced centrifuge should function.
On X (formerly Twitter), a user named @B_bimbobilia expressed disbelief that Ryland Grace, a science teacher in the movie Project Hail Mary, failed to properly balance his centrifuge. They shared their excitement after watching the film and seeing the Artemis II launch, saying it inspired them to revisit STEM fields. However, they were shocked by the teacher’s mistake, questioning how someone in his profession could overlook such a basic safety measure.
Okay, so I just saw this hilarious GIF someone shared – it perfectly captures what I imagine all the science-minded folks were feeling when Grace messed up balancing the centrifuge in Project Hail Mary. It was a genuinely tense moment, and the GIF nails that feeling of ‘Oh no, he did NOT!’
Twitter user @dubsa98 recently watched Project Hail Mary and pointed out a major scientific inaccuracy: a scene where Ryan Gosling’s character uses a centrifuge improperly – running samples in an unbalanced way. They jokingly suggested someone on set should be held accountable!
coasterclairee believes the movie adaptation of Project Hail Mary would be flawless if the character successfully managed to balance the centrifuge.
On Instagram, @allybnerdy shared a video explaining how a centrifuge works using makeup:
@aznnewb also shared a simple video showing what a balanced centrifuge should look like:

A Reddit user, u/cskamosclow, posted about a detail in the movie Project Hail Mary that bothered them as a biologist. They noticed a scene where Ryland Grace used a centrifuge with unbalanced tubes – three on one side and none on the other. Despite this technical inaccuracy, they enjoyed the film and are now interested in reading the book.
A Reddit user, u/According-Order461, recently saw an advance screening of Project Hail Mary and loved it! They did point out one slightly unrealistic moment, though: Dr. Grace, who has a PhD in molecular biology, uses an unbalanced centrifuge. The user was glad to see the characters at least used pipette tips while pipetting.
Project Hail Mary’s Unbalanced Centrifuge Explained
So, as the ship heads towards Tau Ceti, I’m following Grace as he tries to figure out how to deal with this crazy threat – this thing called astrophage that could actually kill the Sun. It’s cool seeing him work, using all the standard lab gear like spectrometers and microscopes. There’s this one detail that really struck me as realistic: he’s running a centrifuge, but he puts the sample tubes right next to each other instead of opposite, to keep it balanced. It’s those little touches that make it feel so real!
There are a couple of possible reasons for this. Some newer, self-balancing centrifuges might be able to manage the imbalance. Alternatively, Grace may still be experiencing amnesia, and hasn’t fully regained his memory of how to properly use lab equipment.
