Hideo Kojima, the creator of games like Metal Gear and Death Stranding, recently shared a photo online that suggests he may be collaborating with Microsoft on “Project Helix.” The picture shows Kojima with Asha Sharma, the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming, and Matt Booty, Xbox’s content chief. Kojima didn’t offer any details, but he was also photographed holding a box labeled “Xbox for Kojima.”
Sharma shared Kojima’s post and mentioned that meeting him was a great way to finish her first 60 days as head of Microsoft Gaming. Kojima probably visited the Xbox offices to discuss his new horror game, OD, but he also received a special gift from the company, as shown in a photo he shared.
The development kit for the next Xbox is expected to be much bigger than the small unit seen in the recent photo. Also, these kits for Project Helix probably aren’t available yet. Jason Ronald, a VP at Xbox, stated last month that developers won’t receive the first versions of the Project Helix software development kit until 2027.
Project Helix uses a specially designed AMD processor and was created alongside the newest versions of DirectX and FSR technologies to push gaming forward. It offers a huge improvement in ray tracing, bringing more realistic visuals and smoother performance. It also incorporates artificial intelligence directly into the graphics processing, leading to better efficiency and allowing for more detailed and immersive game worlds.
Chris Charla, a manager at Xbox, explained that developers need to begin designing for both Xbox and PC now to get ready for the next console, known as Project Helix. The goal is to allow developers to create a single version of their game that will work seamlessly on the Helix console, PCs, and through cloud streaming on devices like smart TVs.
For developers wanting to be prepared for the next generation of Xbox, the best approach is to start building for Xbox consoles and PC now, and utilize the Xbox Play Anywhere program. This will give them a significant advantage when the next generation arrives and ensure their PC games work seamlessly on Project Helix. While the specific implementation will vary, developers currently using Steam or standard PC builds might find it easier to begin with the Xbox PC version and then adapt it for the console. More details on how to leverage Project Helix’s hardware features will be shared soon, but starting now guarantees a native build for the new platform.
Hideo Kojima recently launched Death Stranding 2: On the Beach on PC and is now likely turning his attention to the next projects from Kojima Productions: OD and Physint.
Wonderful way to close my first 60 days.
