Krafton gives its studios a lot of creative freedom, including letting them choose their own tools. For their game, Project Windless, they’ve been experimenting with AI during the early stages of development, but it hasn’t been used in any features players will directly interact with.
According to a Krafton spokesperson, their development teams have a lot of freedom to choose the best tools and techniques for their games. For Project Windless, the team in Montreal is focusing on a classic, handcrafted approach to creating a single-player experience. They’re using AI mainly to help with early exploration and improve their workflow, rather than making it a prominent part of what players will see in the game.
As a fan, I’ve been reading about the AI in the game, and it’s interesting! It’s not the brand-new, ‘generative AI’ everyone’s talking about right now. Instead, it’s actually been used in games for years – think of it as older, but still really effective machine learning. They’re using it in Project Windless to make the characters act more realistically, and even to adjust their animations based on where they are in the game world.
Project Windless relies on established game AI technology to control the actions of characters and make the game world feel more alive, even outside of battles. This AI dictates how characters respond to situations, navigate the environment, and generally behave. The developers confirmed they are not using newer, generative AI tools for creating content or the story.
Project Windless is a game based on the Korean fantasy novel, The Bird That Drinks Tears. The recent trailer showed a quick introduction to the story, featuring a character called a Nhaga holding a heart, and then transitioned into gameplay footage. This action game, where you play as a Rekon, appears to be similar to Koei Tecmo’s Warriors series, with players facing off against large groups of enemies in massive battles.
Normal enemies should be easy to defeat, but bosses will be much more challenging. They hit hard and use large groups of regular enemies to keep players under constant pressure, forcing them to think strategically on the fly.
Okay, so not a ton is known about Project Windless yet, but I’m already hyped. It’s based on this book series, The Bird That Drinks Tears, and everyone raves about how incredibly detailed the world is. The author, Lee Youngdo, really went all-out creating unique cultures, languages, and even religions for all the different races in the game’s universe. As a gamer, that’s huge for me – solid worldbuilding is the key to a really immersive and compelling story, so I’m expecting big things!
