It’s this thing called dynamic pricing, where the price of games seems to change depending on who you are and when you look. It’s already been happening in Europe, and now it’s starting to pop up here in North America. Basically, some people are getting better deals than others, and it just doesn’t feel fair. A lot of us are starting to get pretty upset with Sony because of it – it feels like a really questionable business practice.
Sony’s Dynamic Pricing Is Impacting US Players

PlayStation players are expressing concern about a new pricing strategy Sony is testing. The company is now adjusting prices on digital games based on location, when you’re shopping, and how often you use the PlayStation Store. Recently, this practice – where prices change depending on the user – appears to have expanded to North America. One user noticed Astro Bot was offered at $39.59 with a 34% discount while logged in, but dropped to $26.99 (a 55% discount) when browsing the store without being logged in, as highlighted by Cheap Ass Gamer.
Some players are receiving bigger discounts than others on the PlayStation Store, and Cheap Ass Gamer and others believe this is because those players don’t buy games very often through the store. The exact way this system works is a mystery, but it’s leading to concerns about how Sony might use it to offer personalized prices in the future. Many players dislike this practice of dynamic pricing, and polls show a majority want it to stop. However, Sony appears to be continuing with it as a way to boost sales.
PlayStation Players Really Don’t Like Dynamic Pricing

While current dynamic sales appear restricted to already discounted games, it raises concerns about the future of PlayStation game pricing. Sony’s practice of tailoring sales to individual users could negatively affect game performance – offering bigger discounts to some players at certain times might hurt sales of games from other companies or target specific player groups unfairly. This is particularly upsetting for PlayStation Plus members and frequent PSN Store users, who may feel penalized for their loyalty with higher prices. The very idea of unequal pricing has sparked criticism, with players accusing Sony of unfair practices and prioritizing profit over customer satisfaction by trying to maximize revenue from everyone.
Currently, Sony hasn’t officially acknowledged or commented on reports of fluctuating prices for PS5 games, despite the backlash. It appears the practice is mainly being noticed with the game Astro Bot, and it’s possible Sony is experimenting to see how players will react. The strong negative response – with some people even asking government agencies to investigate – suggests players don’t like this price variation. It’s still uncertain whether Sony will change course or continue with this approach.
