Unexpectedly, a PlayStation 1 game from 2000 has been secretly launched across the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and PS5 platforms. Regrettably, Xbox gamers have been left out as the Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X were not included in this release. Similarly, the Nintendo Switch 2 version is unavailable, but it can be played on the new console via backward compatibility. For those who wish to play this 25-year-old PS1 game in the future will need to pay $9.99.
Speaking of the game in question, it’s the “Fear Effect” from Kronos Digital Entertainment, initially published by Eidos Interactive. Now, since Eidos was acquired, the intellectual property (IP) is now under Square Enix’s ownership. In a collaboration with Limited Run Games, Square Enix has decided to re-release this exclusive PlayStation 1 game. However, it should be noted that this release is simply a port, offering no new features or enhancements to get overly excited about. If you’re seeking a dose of nostalgia from the PS1 era, this might just hit the spot for you!
A Classic From Yesteryear
For people who aren’t familiar with “Fear Effect”, it’s an action-adventure video game that combines stealth and survival-horror elements. When it was first released, it received an impressive 85 rating on GameRankings, making it one of the top PS1 games of its year. It even won the title of “Best Adventure Game” from the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine that year. Although exact sales figures were never disclosed, it was successful enough to warrant a sequel, “Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix”, which came out in 2001 and also exclusively for the PS1. This sequel was met with a similar positive reception as the original game. Unfortunately, the prequel is currently not playable on modern gaming platforms.
Fear Effect Sedna Stink
In contemporary times, the Fear Effect series has developed a somewhat unfavorable reputation, particularly due to its more recent installment, Fear Effect Sedna. Released by developer Sushee and publisher Forever Entertainment in 2018, after Square Enix licensed out the IP, this game was met with criticism as it represented the first new Fear Effect game in 16 years and served as a sequel to the original. Unfortunately, it was one of the poorest games of its year, as indicated by its Metacritic score range of 42-50.
Additionally, around this time, a remake of the first Fear Effect game was in development at MegaPixel Studio, but unfortunately, it was canceled in the 2020s.
Hey there fellow gamers! If you’ve dived into the chilling world of Fear Effect Sedna and found it a bit rough around the edges, don’t let that dissuade you. This fresh re-release is not at all a reflection of the high-quality gaming experience offered by the initial two Fear Effect games. However, if PS1 nostalgia doesn’t spark in your heart with this release, there are other alternatives out there. Believe it or not, this isn’t the only PS1 game making a comeback this year. In fact, it’s not even the first one from 2000 to return this year! So, keep your eyes peeled for more PS1 classics making their way back into our gaming lives.
Of course, don’t hesitate to share your thoughts! Have you considered playing this timeless PlayStation 1 game now that it has been made compatible with contemporary gaming systems?
