PS1 Game From 1997 Just Got a Major Update

As a gamer who has been around since the dawn of the PlayStation era, let me tell you, 1997 was a golden year for us old-school gamers. I remember spending countless hours immersed in those iconic titles, from Final Fantasy 7 to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. But amidst all that glory, there were hidden gems like Herc’s Adventures that often slipped through the cracks.

1997 saw a plethora of groundbreaking games like Final Fantasy 7, GoldenEye 007, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Star Fox 64, Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Diablo, Grand Theft Auto, Fallout, Mega Man Legends, Quake II, Dungeon Keeper, The Curse of Monkey Island, and Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee. This year was so rich in gaming releases that many believe it to be the pinnacle of gaming history. Unfortunately, with such a dense lineup, several games were overshadowed or overlooked. However, now, one of those 1997 classics has received an update for the PS5, bringing new life to a timeless gem.

A less known title from 1997, Herc’s Adventures by Big Ape Productions and LucasArts, was initially exclusive to the Sega Saturn for a brief period before moving to PlayStation 1 later in the same month. This action-adventure game received generally positive reviews when it debuted. Sales figures are unknown, but the lack of a follow-up suggests it didn’t perform exceptionally well.

In 2023, the game was simultaneously launched on PS4 and PS5, along with a release on PS Plus Premium. A year later, this game, which can also be bought separately, has been updated for the first time to include Trophies. Notably, the trophy list includes a Platinum Trophy.

Through Trophies, the epic saga of Herc’s Adventures now aligns with a burgeoning roster of nine third-party PlayStation classics, which have been augmented to include trophy support. This endeavor commenced in June, and has since upgraded the following games: Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmares, Herc’s Adventures, Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Summoner, Thrillville, Tomb Raider Legends, Toy Story 2, and Toy Story 3.

It’s still uncertain what criteria Sony uses to select which classic PlayStation games get trophy support initially, but it seems likely they aim to implement this feature in as many classic titles as they can.
