PS1 Players May Be Disappointed in Tomb Raider Remake Change

Longtime fans of the original Tomb Raider might be surprised by the upcoming remake, which differs significantly from the classic PlayStation game. Tomb Raider, first released in 1996, quickly became a hugely popular and influential action-adventure title, launching a major franchise. While the original game has been updated over the years, it hasn’t been completely rebuilt until now. At the 2025 Game Awards, two new Tomb Raider games were announced. One, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, is a remake that’s been 30 years in the making and is scheduled for release in 2026.

So, I heard from the folks at Crystal Dynamics about the new Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. They’re saying they’re tweaking the difficulty to be a bit more forgiving for how we play games today. The original Tomb Raider was notoriously hard – you basically had to learn from your mistakes and memorize where all the instant-death traps were, like those huge rolling boulders and spike pits. That was a big part of the experience, but apparently, they’re moving away from so many ‘game over’ moments and making exploration a little less punishing. It sounds like they want it challenging, but not quite as brutal as before.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Might Have Its Difficulty Toned Down

Crystal Dynamics’ studio head Scott Amos and game director Will Kerslake recently spoke with Video Games Chronicle about the upcoming remake. Amos explained that the project, called Legacy of Atlantis, is a passion project created by fans, for fans. Rather than simply updating the original, the team is completely rebuilding it in Unreal Engine 5, essentially reimagining the game. They’re preserving the core elements that define Tomb Raider while updating the experience for modern gamers and drastically enhancing the graphics.

According to Kerslake, updating a game often means adjusting its difficulty to appeal to today’s players. However, he emphasized that key elements of the Tomb Raider experience – puzzles, fighting, exploration, and thrilling action – will remain. He pointed to the Legacy of Atlantis trailer as evidence, promising fans will still find the classic Tomb Raider challenges they expect. While he didn’t directly state the game would be easier, his comments suggest a move toward accommodating modern player preferences.

Early video games were known for being quite challenging. Over time, games have generally become easier, or they’ve added options that let players customize the difficulty. While it hasn’t been officially announced, the upcoming Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will probably have a difficulty setting. Regardless, the initial previews suggest the game will reimagine the original Tomb Raider story and gameplay for a modern audience, continuing the series after a 30-year hiatus.
