A well-known source says that this month’s PlayStation Plus Premium lineup will include the original PlayStation version of Ridge Racer. This is a bit of a surprising choice, as a near-perfect arcade version of the classic Namco racing game is already available through Hamster Corporation’s Arcade Archives series.
Although this version of the game was initially praised, it doesn’t perform as well as the original release on System 22. It runs at a slower frame rate – 30fps on North American consoles and a very sluggish 25fps on European ones – and the graphics aren’t as good.
However, the game does offer extra content, like eight unlockable cars. You can earn these by playing the Galaxian minigame while the game is loading.
Even so, adding this game to the highest tier of PS Plus feels strange, particularly given how slowly these classic titles are being released and the fact that the original arcade version is already available on current PlayStation consoles. It would have made more sense to include games like Ridge Racer Revolution or, even better, Rage Racer.
Since this game is published by Bandai Namco, it likely won’t have Trophies. They haven’t included them in any of their retro game releases so far.
We might still find out about even more games coming to the new PS Plus Premium update, since the list we’ve seen so far isn’t complete. Hopefully, there will be more exciting titles added than just the original PS1 Ridge Racer!
