A game series that originally launched exclusively on the PlayStation 2 is making a comeback after 20 years. However, the new release isn’t quite what longtime fans of the series might have expected. The series first appeared in 2002 and was developed by Monolith Soft before Nintendo acquired the studio in 2007. Today, Monolith Soft is famous for the Xenoblade Chronicles games, but before that, they were known for a different series published by Bandai Namco.
From 2002 to 2006, the creators released a five-part RPG series called Xenosaga, featuring three main games, a side story, and a remake. Now, Xenosaga is making a comeback, but not with a new game. Instead, it’s a re-release – and it’s not the version many fans were hoping for.
Spin-Off Xenosaga Game Returns
Back in 2004, a spin-off game called Xenosaga: Pied Piper was released only in Japan for mobile phones and never made available in other regions. Now, after 20 years, it’s being re-released on Nintendo Switch and PC. Currently, however, the re-release is only confirmed for Japan, meaning fans in the West will have to wait longer to play it.
It’s clear that Monolith Soft isn’t working on this re-release; G-Mode is handling it as part of their G-Mode Archives+ line. So far, there’s no news about the game coming to the West, and it doesn’t sound like any changes have been made to the original mobile game – it’s a simple re-release of the classic. A release date hasn’t been announced yet, but a new trailer is available to watch.
It’s currently unknown if Bandai Namco is directly involved in this release, though they likely approved it as the publisher. However, it doesn’t seem to signal a broader revival of the series. The last update we had was in 2019, when plans for a remastered collection were cancelled by Bandai Namco.
