The long-running series, which originally launched on the PlayStation 2 over 24 years ago and was once exclusive to that console, is getting a brand new installment. The developers say this new game has been in development for a decade. However, we don’t yet know when it will be released or on what platforms it will be available.
CyberConnect2 has announced a new game in the .hack action RPG series called .hack//Z.E.R.O. Bandai Namco owns the .hack series, but isn’t directly working on this project. While the specific consoles it will be released on haven’t been announced, it is confirmed to be in development for “home consoles.” Details about the game are currently limited, but it will once again be set within the in-game MMORPG, The World, and take place 10 years after previous installments. CyberConnect2 has hinted that this new game will feature more content relating to the real world than past .hack titles.
A 24-Year-Old Action RPG Series
If you haven’t heard of this series before, it’s likely because it’s quite specialized. It first appeared in 2002 with the game .hack//Infection. The series has been quiet since 2017’s .hack//G.U. Last Recode, though that was simply a remastered version, not a brand new game. The last truly new installment was released in 2010 as a PlayStation Portable exclusive called .hack//Link.
Okay, so they haven’t said what systems this new game will be on yet. But looking at the last one, .hack//Link, it only came out on PC and PS4. That makes me think this one might be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, especially since the series started way back on the PS2. If it does come to other consoles, I’m guessing PS4, Switch, or maybe the new Switch 2. I really don’t see it happening on Xbox, honestly.
We’ll have to wait and see when more details about the game are released. CyberConnect2 likely would have hinted at a release this year if that was the plan, but right now it’s just guesswork. We don’t know why Bandai Namco isn’t directly involved, though they’re probably receiving licensing fees – that hasn’t been officially stated. However, CyberConnect2 has indicated that this game will have a larger budget than their previous titles.
