A game that was originally exclusive to the PlayStation 4 is set to shut down permanently this year. Released in 2016 – a strong year for PS4 exclusives like Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, The Last Guardian, and Ratchet & Clank – this title wasn’t a first-party Sony game, but Sony did pay to make it exclusive to PlayStation. Fortunately, it wasn’t a hugely popular game, and now, after almost a decade, its servers are being taken offline.
GungHo Online Entertainment and Grasshopper Manufacture have announced that the online game Let It Die will no longer be available after August 31st. This affects players on both PlayStation and PC, as the free-to-play hack-and-slash game was released on both platforms. While it wasn’t available on any other consoles, including the PS5, it is playable on PS5 through backward compatibility.
PS5 Sequel Carries the Torch
Okay, so the original Let It Die from 2016 is going offline, which is a bummer, but the good news is they’re following it up with Let It Die: Inferno in 2025. That new one’s staying exclusive to PlayStation, but it’s coming to the PS5. Honestly, knowing that the spirit of the game will live on with a sequel makes the shutdown a little easier to swallow, and it doesn’t feel totally out of the blue.
Although the online servers for Let It Die are closing, the game won’t be gone completely. The developers are removing all online features and transforming it into a single-player experience that you can play offline. This won’t be a free update, however; it will be released as downloadable content (DLC) for players who want to continue enjoying the 2016 PS4 game. The price of the DLC hasn’t been announced yet.
The creators haven’t explained the exact reasons for these changes, but it’s likely due to the rising costs of running the online servers, which aren’t being fully covered by the game’s revenue. Maintaining those servers also creates security concerns. They probably also want to dedicate all their efforts to developing the next game in the series.
This game holds a special place for many PlayStation fans. It was a PlayStation 4 exclusive released during a memorable, surprise announcement at PSX – one of the last PSX events ever. While it initially received a respectable score of 72 on Metacritic, it’s been downloaded over six million times by 2020, meaning a lot of players have experienced it. If you haven’t, you have until August 31st to play this version, as a different, paid version will be available afterward, but this original experience will remain playable offline.
