PS4 Exclusive Launch Game Will Cease to Exist This Month

The unique game available only on PlayStation 4, initially launched with the system in 2013, will no longer be accessible at the end of this month (August 2025). Although it was removed from the PlayStation Store and production ceased in 2024, it continued to function. However, its availability will come to an end on August 31st, effectively marking the end of life for the 12-year-old PS4 exclusive console.

Retribution is referred to as a PS4 console exclusive, it means that it can only be played on a PlayStation 4 and not on other consoles such as Nintendo or Xbox. Interestingly, this game was initially released in 2012, but it was only available on PC, not on the PS4 which came later. Even though Blacklight: Retribution was launched before the PS4, it did not make its way to the PS5 either.

Initially, a free-to-play first-person shooter was developed by Zombie Studios, who managed the game until 2015 when their Seattle-based studio ceased operations. Subsequently, Hardsuit Labs assumed control over the game, a studio that gained notoriety for being removed from the development of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 following years of problematic production.

Initially, Blacklight: Retribution received a respectable score of 75 on Metacritic upon its PC debut. However, the PS4 version, released a year later, underperformed with a 58 rating. Despite these ratings, the game failed to gain significant popularity, leading to the shutdown of the PC version in 2019 and eventually the discontinuation of the PS4 version in 2024. Nevertheless, the PS4 version has continued to function, maintaining enough active players to ensure matchmaking. In essence, this decision may affect some gamers who are still playing it.

Greetings, Agents! The developers regrettably announce that the backend services crucial for Blacklight: Retribution will be permanently turned off on August 31st. This decision comes due to a lack of viable solutions for maintaining the backend services for Blacklight.

Regrettably, it won’t be possible to download Blacklight: Retribution in 2025. If you’d like to enjoy a farewell game this month, you must have the game installed in your library already.

As we move forward in the age of digital gaming, with servers and licenses playing significant roles, it’s regrettably more frequent for games to disappear over time. The PS4 exclusivity and its status as a popular launch title make this instance one of the most notable examples of this rising trend in 2025.
