Recently, the price of physical copies of a Star Wars game for PlayStation 4 has been increasing rapidly on resale sites. While video game resale values often change, and older games can become valuable, this price surge is happening for a surprising reason. Usually, games become more expensive when they’re removed from digital stores, making physical copies the only way to play. However, this Star Wars game is becoming more valuable for a different reason altogether.
Copies of Star Wars: Racer Revenge for the PlayStation 4 have recently begun selling for as much as $300 on sites like eBay. Originally released in 2002 for the PlayStation 2, Racer Revenge is a sequel to the popular Star Wars Episode 1: Racer. It was re-released on PS4 in 2015 and given a physical release in 2019 by Limited Run Games. These PS4 copies weren’t considered special until a recent announcement changed things.
The price of Star Wars: Racer Revenge has skyrocketed to hundreds of dollars because it’s reportedly a key component in a new method for jailbreaking PlayStation 5 consoles. This jailbreak, when it becomes public, will require a specific game to work, and Star Wars: Racer Revenge on the PS4 appears to be that game. As a result, people are rushing to buy it.
Only around 10,000 physical copies of Star Wars: Racer Revenge were ever made, and with a recent surge in popularity, prices have skyrocketed. Just a few days ago, copies for the PlayStation 4 were selling for $50 to $75, but now they typically cost between $250 and $300. Some listings on eBay are even asking for $400 or more.
It’s unclear how much higher prices will go for copies of Star Wars: Racer Revenge. If you were looking to buy a PS4 version, it’s good you got it before the recent news about jailbreaking surfaced. The price of the original PS2 version shouldn’t be affected by all of this, though.
