PS4 is no longer the fastest-selling console in the US, according to Circana sales data.
As we mentioned earlier this week, the Switch 2 has sold 5% more units in its first three months than Sony’s previous record.
Analyst Mat Piscatella reports that Nintendo’s new console sold 2.4 million units in its first three months, ending August 2025. This is a stronger start than the PlayStation 4 had, which sold 2.2 million units in its first three months ending January 2014.
It’s important to consider the circumstances: the PlayStation 4 was harder to find in stores than the Switch 2. Also, Sony released its console during the busy holiday season, while Nintendo chose a less popular time of year for its launch.
The PS5 could have potentially outsold the PS4, but the timing of its release during the pandemic, combined with years of limited availability, makes that impossible to know. It was very difficult to find for a long time after it first came out.
This is positive news for the gaming industry and console market in general. With the upcoming release of Pokémon Z-A, Nintendo is likely feeling very optimistic about its continued success.
Of course, records don’t last forever, and Sony will now focus on the PlayStation 6 to try and regain the lead from Nintendo.
We anticipate a challenging shift from the PlayStation 5 to the next generation, primarily because of economic conditions and the increasing difficulty of creating significant hardware improvements that players will truly notice.
If Sony prices its next console reasonably and offers a good range of games when it’s released, its success will likely depend on how easily people can actually buy it – otherwise, it could seriously compete with the new Switch 2.
