PS5 Fans Want Trophy Upgrades After Xbox Improves Achievements

PlayStation 5 fans are feeling a bit jealous after Xbox revealed some upgrades to its Achievements feature.

During the PlayStation 3 era, Sony took inspiration from Microsoft’s approach to player achievement systems, launching Trophies with the game Super Stardust HD. Initially a feature players could choose to use, Trophies quickly became required for many games and are now a core element of the PlayStation experience.

We’ve always liked how Trophies work – the different levels clearly show who likes to fully complete games and who doesn’t. However, the system hasn’t been updated much since it first came out, and especially not since the PlayStation 5 launched.

Xbox is updating its system with a redesigned Achievement unlock experience and a feature that lets you hide games on your profile. They appreciate the notification system for trophies on the PlayStation 5, and hiding games is already a common option, so those aspects aren’t changing.

Microsoft is testing a feature we think is great: the ability to highlight games you’ve completely finished. When your friends and family look at your game list, completed games will have a special border and shading to make them easily noticeable.

We quite like this idea and it seems like something Sony could easily integrate.

It would be great if we could highlight particularly challenging Trophies on our profile, similar to how some mobile games let you showcase difficult achievements. We think this would be a cool addition to the PS5.

Sony clearly had big plans for Trophies when they first introduced them on the PS3. Remember the idea of a virtual trophy room you could walk around in PS Home? There’s a lot of potential to make earning and viewing Trophies even more enjoyable.

We’re optimistic that Microsoft’s moves will encourage PlayStation to expand its features. While we’re satisfied with what’s currently available, there’s definitely room for improvement and more possibilities to explore.
