PS5 Game Just Made Free With PS Plus Hailed as “Masterpiece”

PlayStation Plus subscribers can now get a highly-rated game for free on PS5. Critics are calling it a “masterpiece,” and it’s available to everyone – whether you have the Essential, Extra, or Premium plan. However, you’ll need to claim it before November 4th, as the offer expires then. Normally, the game costs $60 on the PlayStation Store.

This October, PlayStation Plus members can download Alan Wake 2 for free as part of their subscription. The game, developed by Remedy Entertainment, is a sequel to the popular 2010 title Alan Wake and was released in 2023 after a long wait. Critics loved it – it received an 89 on Metacritic and was nominated for several Game Awards, including Game of the Year. While it didn’t win the top prize, it did win awards for Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction. So it’s no surprise that PlayStation Plus subscribers are really enjoying it!

“A One-of-a-Kind Gameplay Experience”

A popular post on the PlayStation Plus Reddit page is currently encouraging players who haven’t yet experienced the newest game added to the service to give it a try.

The post urges people to play Alan Wake 2, highlighting its incredibly creative art style and cinematic direction thanks to Sam Lake’s vision. It’s described as a unique and unforgettable gaming experience, especially for fans of their previous game, Control.

One commenter called it a masterpiece and said it’s still on their mind almost two years later, adding that all PlayStation Plus subscribers should try it.

One player said that if you enjoy shows and movies like *Twin Peaks*, *Silent Hill*, *The Silence of the Lambs*, *The Shining*, *From*, and *Dark*, you’ll definitely want to try this game.

What You Need to Know

If you’re thinking of trying *Alan Wake 2* – it’s currently available for free with PlayStation Plus for the next month – keep in mind that while it’s a fantastic game on its own, you’ll get even more out of it if you’ve played the original. The two games are linked. Also, most horror games are relatively short, but *Alan Wake 2* is a longer experience. If you’re playing through PS Plus, plan to spend around 20 to 30 hours with the sequel.

While not everyone has been a fan, *Alan Wake 2* has been overwhelmingly well-received. It boasts a 4.72 out of 5 rating on the PlayStation Store, and most players – including us – haven’t just enjoyed it, they’ve loved it. We even called it Remedy’s best game to date in our review.

The future of *Alan Wake* is uncertain. Remedy Entertainment has mentioned the possibility of *Alan Wake 3*, but hasn’t made any firm commitments. Given that *Alan Wake 2* didn’t achieve massive sales, another sequel isn’t assured.
