PS5 Game Shutdown in 2024 Playable Again Through Fan Servers

It’s incredibly frustrating for players when online games disappear forever. When game servers shut down, even new titles can become unplayable, leaving only trailers and memories behind. This affects both popular and lesser-known games. Fortunately, fans are increasingly working to restore these games, driven by passion rather than profit. They want to keep these games alive and playable for everyone to enjoy, and now, thanks to a dedicated community, one of last year’s most significant game shutdowns is getting a surprising revival.

Though Sony shut down the hero shooter Concord after a brief run, dedicated fans have revived it. They’ve created custom servers and rebuilt the game’s core systems, allowing players to enjoy full matches once again. Concord was intended to be Sony’s first major foray into live-service games, but it didn’t succeed. However, a small and passionate community continues to support the game and the now-closed Firewalk Studios.

A dedicated community team – including developers Red, open_wizard, and gwog – has successfully brought the game Concord back online using fan-operated servers. This revival was made possible by a complete overhaul of the game’s underlying code by open_wizard, detailed analysis of Concord’s systems by Red, and vital problem-solving support from gwog during testing. The team announced the achievement on their Discord server.

The project is still under development and while you can play it, there are some bugs. We’re setting up our servers now, and once that’s done, we’ll start private playtesting. If you’re interested in joining the playtests, please let me know, and include your region and time zone so we can get you involved.

Although it’s still under development, has some glitches, and isn’t fully finished, the fact that Concord is playable at all is amazing. Considering how quickly the game was taken offline after its August 2024 launch, it’s surprising anything remained to rebuild. It’s uncertain how long this restored version will last or if Concord will ever attract a significant number of players again. However, thanks to passionate fans, the game won’t be disappearing anytime soon.

Sony isn’t alone in shutting down servers for online games. Ubisoft faced criticism for doing the same with several of its titles. As more multiplayer games compete for players, older or less popular ones are often abandoned by their creators. Companies sometimes decide it’s not worth the cost to keep servers running if a game isn’t making enough money. This trend is likely to continue as the gaming industry grows, making players cautious about investing in online games.
