A new action game coming only to PlayStation 5 has been revealed, and it feels reminiscent of the original God of War titles. The action genre has remained strong for the last ten years, with several popular releases in 2025 alone, including Ghost of Yotei, The First Berserker: Khazan, Blades of Fire, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Ninja Gaiden 4. However, if you’re looking for a game that captures the feel of action titles from the PlayStation 2 and 3 era, this new release could be exactly what you’ve been waiting for.
ChillyRoom today revealed a first look at their upcoming game, Loulan: The Cursed Sand. This action game is set in ancient China and puts players in the role of a resurrected skeletal warrior tasked with protecting the princess of Loulan. While a release date hasn’t been announced, Loulan: The Cursed Sand will be available on both PS5 and PC. The game is part of PlayStation’s China Hero Project, a program that has already brought us titles like Lost Soul Aside, Hardcore Mecha, and F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch.
You can get a look at the debut trailer for Loulan: The Cursed Sand below:
The game Loulan appears heavily inspired by action titles like God of War, Dante’s Inferno, and Devil May Cry. Players will use diverse weapons and skills to defeat enemies and explore the game world. This style of fast-paced action has become less common since the success of games like Dark Souls and Elden Ring. It’s a welcome change to see Loulan aiming for the kind of experience that was popular almost two decades ago, rather than following the current trend.
According to ChillyRoom’s Hongwen Huai, the team creating this project consists of experienced gamers who grew up in the 80s and 90s. They were heavily influenced by classic action games like the original God of War and traditional arcade titles. Their aim is to combine the fast-paced combat of those classic arcade games with new, modern gameplay features – especially the special connection between the main character and their sandblade. They hope players will have a lot of fun playing it.
It’s still unclear whether Loulan: The Cursed Sand will be as good as everyone hopes, but PlayStation 5 owners should definitely keep an eye on it. We expect to learn more about when the game will be released soon.
