One of Sony’s biggest mistakes this generation was its attempt to create ongoing, live-service games. This led to the cancellation of a promising open-world multiplayer project being developed by Bend Studio, the team behind Days Gone. The project was scrapped early in the year, and several months later, Bend Studio reportedly had to lay off around 30% of its employees.
The project may have stalled for several reasons. Robert Morrison, a senior animator now at VOID Interactive working on Ready or Not, explained that they didn’t achieve significant progress during his three years with the project, and he predicted its eventual cancellation.
Okay, so it looks like Sony messed up a bit on this project, but honestly, it just didn’t come together. We don’t know what Sony’s planning now, but I saw on LinkedIn that a former designer, Jacob Feith, mentioned a bunch of projects got scrapped before they were even announced. Interestingly, there was a job posting back in August that hinted their next game might have had multiplayer, which is a shame if that’s also gone now.
The studio plans to keep making exciting games, even though one of their online projects was cancelled. Their most recent release was Days Gone Remastered for PlayStation 5, which came out earlier this year. You can read our review of it here.
Looking back, we didn’t achieve as much as we should have during my three years with the company. That’s why I wasn’t surprised when the project was eventually cancelled.
