Approximately six months have passed since Sony unveiled its priciest gaming console yet, the PS5 Pro, hit the market.
Prior to its debut in November of the previous year, there were doubts about whether the system actually needed to exist. This console generation has undeniably been an unusual one, with the COVID-19 pandemic initially causing delays and it taking a considerable amount of time for it to truly seem innovative and exciting. Some people even contend that it’s still missing that special something, approaching five years into its life cycle.
Initially, the PS5 Pro was designed specifically for dedicated PlayStation enthusiasts, and indeed, its cost strongly supported this notion.
Three weeks into its debut, I convened our Push Square team to pen a Talking Point piece similar to this one. Initially, our views on this high-end gadget were quite diverse, but has our perspective evolved as we’ve spent more time with it in the ensuing months?
Here we are, prepared to reassess the PS5 Pro. Feel free to read through our thoughts first, then join the conversation by sharing your opinions in the comments below.
“I’m Just About Satisfied”
Approximately 180 days have passed since I got the PS5 Pro, and I must say it’s been quite satisfying so far. While there hasn’t been any one standout feature that completely justifies the console, a gradual accumulation of minor yet impactful improvements has made me truly value the upgraded system.
The primary motivation behind possessing the machine remains its potential for future advancements. For instance, observing the remarkable visuals of GTA 6 from a base PS5 in Trailer 2, and the fact that Death Stranding 2 previews were all held on Sony’s five-year-old console, it’s intriguing to imagine what a PS5 Pro could achieve, enhancing both their appearance and performance even further.
I don’t think GTA 6 will achieve a smooth 60 frames-per-second on the PS5 Pro, but perhaps offering a 40fps mode would be beneficial. This would represent an improvement and would make a significant difference for a game that could shape the next decade of gaming. Such enhancements can only be expected from the PS5 Pro within the console market.
As I mentioned initially, it seems unlikely that there will be a specific upgrade on the original PS5 that warrants an immediate switch to a PS5 Pro. Instead, what we’re probably going to get is a collection of impressive improvements throughout the console’s lifespan, which, when viewed in retrospect, we’ll realize were valuable additions to our gaming experience.

“I Still Find It Difficult to Recommend”
To put it straightforwardly, I’m yet undecided about the PS5 Pro. Personally, given my extensive gaming habits, having one feels beneficial as I play games both on and off the job. However, I struggle to advise others to get it, especially those who already own a standard PS5.
As a gamer myself, I’ve got to admit, at first glance, the Pro might seem like an extravagant purchase, catering to a select few. But when you view it as a premium product, designed for optimal performance, it does start to make sense. Sure, it’s pricey, but six months down the line, there are a multitude of top-tier games that run smoother on this enhanced hardware.
In summary, despite my belief that the Pro still needs a standout, must-have feature (or “killer app”) to convince people of its worth for an upgrade, it might eventually emerge – maybe soon with a game like Ghost of Yotei. For now, you’ll have to settle for enhanced versions of games such as Monster Hunter Wilds and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which offer noticeable improvements compared to their original versions.
In brief, I enjoy the PS5 Pro, though I had expected it to feel more indispensable at this point. However, if additional frames and pixels don’t particularly matter to you, rest assured that you aren’t foregoing much. This perception might evolve over time.
