A new Sony patent has revealed more details about PSSR 2.0, a feature planned for the PS5 Pro that’s expected to launch later this year.
People are saying the new software update will be released shortly, and this patent filing seems to support those rumors.
Like many tech patents, the documentation is full of complicated terms and diagrams that are hard to understand. However, it clearly describes an AI-powered upscaler for the PS5 Pro.
PSSR 2.0 appears to deliver on expectations, offering a refined technology that boosts performance with smoother frame rates and sharper resolutions when activated.
Currently, PSSR focuses on making games look sharper without slowing them down. It usually works by first reducing the game’s original resolution, and then improving the resulting image quality.
So, from what I understand from this patent, the next version of this tech could be a game-changer. Instead of just lowering the resolution when things get hectic, it sounds like it’ll try to smooth out the frame rate. Basically, it’s going to try and find a sweet spot to keep the game running well without making it look as blurry. That’s a huge improvement if it works!
This should, in theory, reduce some of the most frequent issues with PSSR, such as strange visual glitches that happen when the upscaler struggles to interpret the already downscaled image from the game.
We expect Sony to soon share detailed information about PSSR 2.0, giving us a better idea of what it includes.
I’m really excited about this upcoming software update! Let’s all try to be patient while it rolls out, though. Feel free to share your excitement (and maybe a little anticipation!) in the comments below.
