According to Sony’s previous statements, the partnership with AMD will include introducing FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) for the PS5 Pro. However, recent whispers suggest this update may not occur until the early stages of 2026, as suggested by YouTube content creator Moore’s Law is Dead in a recent video.
The update in question is anticipated to coincide or closely follow AMD’s announcement of FSR 4 support for its graphics cards based on the RDNA 3 architecture, which is estimated for late 2025. However, it’s important to approach this information with caution as it’s still a rumor and no official confirmation has been made by Sony or AMD yet.
Back in December 2024, Sony and AMD officially teamed up. This collaboration involves leveraging artificial intelligence technology for both graphics and gameplay, as revealed by Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PS5 and PS5 Pro.
Back in March, Cerny discussed further details about their partnership, mentioning that they aim to incorporate FSR 4’s cutting-edge image upscaling tech into the PS5 Pro’s PSSR (PlayStation Streaming Service). This collaboration has been a multi-year project for both companies, with them focusing on seamlessly integrating PSSR within Sony’s gaming titles.
By 2025, our aim is to collaborate closely with developers to incorporate PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) into their games. Simultaneously, we’ve already begun the process of integrating a new neural network onto the PS5 Pro.” (Cerny was referring to the image upscaling technology used in the PS5 Pro.)
Sony aims to enhance its PSSR technology by creating a feature comparable to FSR 4 for the PS5 Pro, with the goal of making it available for 2026 games. This advancement in PSSR is intended to deliver results similar to those produced by FSR 4 when given identical inputs. As Cerny stated, achieving this integration requires significant ambition and time, hence its absence on the current PS5 Pro model.
Our focus lies there, and we’re confident we can attain it,” he went on. “The maximum performance level for the PS5 Pro, without sparsity, is 300 TOPS in 8-bit format, which stands favorably against the most recent AMD GPUs. We don’t find sparsity to be beneficial for this specific upscaling method.
Speaking as an enthusiast, I must say that the FSR 4, unveiled this year alongside AMD’s latest Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9060 graphics cards, is a fresh take on image upscaling technology. At launch, they introduced standard RX 9070 and RX 9060 GPUs, catering to general needs, along with more potent versions – the RX 9070 XT and RX 9060 XT GPUs for those PC gamers who crave extra power.
The graphics cards themselves were unveiled earlier this year at CES 2025.
