
Sony and AMD have been collaborating on advancements to improve gaming graphics for some time. Recent reports suggest the next update to PlayStation Super Spectral Resolution (PSSR) will be a significant leap forward, not just a small tweak. According to information shared by YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead, game developers are anticipating substantial new capabilities in the upcoming version of PSSR.
A key new feature is Multi-Frame Super Resolution 2, or MFSR2. Previously, this technology was known internally as MFSR1 (PSSR). MFSR2 represents a significant upgrade with a revised algorithm that requires less input data. This will result in lower memory usage and faster processing times on your graphics card. The developer emphasizes that this isn’t a minor update – it’s a substantial improvement.
The developer pointed out that the documentation treats PSSR, FSR 3, and FSR 4 as distinct technologies, suggesting each will be upgraded independently. This aligns with expectations that the PS5 Pro will benefit from FSR 4 compatibility in 2026, and that improvements to PSSR 2 will also be released as a separate update for the console.
Last October, Mark Cerny, the lead architect for both the PS5 and PS5 Pro, and Jack Huynh, a senior vice president at AMD, discussed new technologies they were developing together. In a video, they explained that these technologies would reduce the strain on the graphics processor (GPU), allowing it to prioritize creating higher-quality images.
According to Cerny, the real difficulty isn’t creating these technologies, but actually making them work well. Technologies like FSR and PSSR rely on complex neural networks that put a huge strain on graphics cards. They require a lot of processing power and fast access to a large amount of memory, and the way graphics cards are built doesn’t always make that easy.
In the video, Cerny and Huynh discussed three main technologies: Neural Arrays, Neural Radiance Caching, and Radiance Cores. They explained that using all three together is crucial for maximizing memory bandwidth and ensuring the GPU can handle a game’s processing needs effectively.
According to Cerny, this new technology offers several advantages, like using less power and creating more detailed graphics. But the biggest benefit is how well it works with existing PlayStation technologies – Neural Arrays and Radiance Cores – allowing them to create the best gaming experiences possible.
