The PlayStation 5 is turning five this month! Since its launch in November 2020, the PS5 has brought us a wealth of new games, different console models, and updated controllers. To celebrate this milestone, Sony is reflecting on the console’s journey so far, including a look at the most popular games played on the PS5.
Sony recently announced that the PlayStation 5 has sold more than 84 million units globally over the past five years. Players have spent over 100 billion hours gaming on these consoles during that time. While you might expect the most popular games to be exclusive titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, it’s interesting to note that only one of the top three single-player games is a PlayStation exclusive.
PS5 Players Might Love Exclusives, But They Play These Games Even More

Since the PS5 came out, PlayStation has released several highly anticipated exclusive games, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. However, these haven’t become the most-played games on the console. When it comes to multiplayer, the top three games aren’t surprising: Fortnite, GTA 5, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. These popular franchises are consistently at the top of the charts across all consoles. Plus, PlayStation exclusives generally aren’t focused on multiplayer experiences anyway.
Let’s talk about single-player games. Many people assume exclusive titles are the biggest reason to buy a PlayStation 5. While exclusives definitely influence the decision, PlayStation’s data shows players actually spent the most time playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, God of War Ragnarok, and Hogwarts Legacy.
So, I’ve been checking out the most popular games on PS5, and it’s interesting to see what people are playing. Out of the top titles, only God of War Ragnarok is truly exclusive to PlayStation. It came out in 2022 and is available on PS4, PS5, and even PC now, but it’s still not on other consoles. The other two big ones, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Hogwarts Legacy, have always been available on multiple platforms. Valhalla actually launched with the PS5 back in 2020 and was on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC right away. Hogwarts Legacy followed in early 2023, releasing on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC before eventually making its way to older consoles too.

There’s a noticeable difference between the most-played and best-selling games. While exclusive titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man and Miles Morales are among the top sellers on PS5, they aren’t played as much as expansive open-world games like Hogwarts Legacy. Interestingly, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla didn’t sell as well as other games, but players spent a lot of time with it, making it one of the top 3 most-played titles.
It’s no surprise to see games like Hogwarts Legacy, Assassin’s Creed, and God of War leading the charts. However, with PlayStation focusing on exclusive games and Xbox moving away from them, it’s interesting that only one of the most popular games on the platform is exclusive to PlayStation.
