A lot of gamers feel like we’re still early in the current console generation, thanks to a strong lineup of exclusive games. While there’s talk of the PlayStation 6 potentially arriving in 2027, rising costs for RAM could push back its release – and the next Xbox – even further. Because of this, David Gibson, a senior analyst at MST Financial, suggests Sony might keep the PlayStation 5 on the market for longer than expected.
According to Gibson on SandStoneInsights, the company anticipates strong third-quarter earnings, fueled by sales of its own games and titles from other developers. He also mentioned that Sony is planning for a longer lifespan for the PlayStation 5, which could mean the release of the PlayStation 6 might be pushed back further than people currently predict.
It’s unclear how long the PlayStation 5 supply issues will last. Even if the cost of RAM – a key component – stops rising or even decreases this year, it will still take Sony time to get enough to produce large quantities of consoles. They currently have enough to avoid another immediate price hike, but widespread availability is a matter of time, not whether it will happen at all.
More game developers are now adding support for Power Saver Mode in their games. Many think this feature will be a key part of the software development kit for the PlayStation 6, which is expected to include a handheld version.
It’s likely some games originally planned for the PS6’s release might come out sooner. For example, Naughty Dog is reportedly aiming to launch Intergalactic around mid-2027, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier. He also mentioned the studio had periods of required overtime last year.
