A reliable source known for leaking PlayStation information, KeplerL2, suggests Sony might reduce costs with the PS6 by including only 1TB of storage and removing the disc drive. A bundle with the disc drive could be offered separately, similar to how the PS5 is currently sold.
The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition comes with 825GB of storage. You can increase this by buying and installing a compatible NVMe SSD separately.
Memory prices have risen dramatically in the last year, more than doubling in cost. Because of this, Sony has temporarily stopped selling memory cards for its digital cameras until prices stabilize.
According to a report from Hardware Sneak KeplerL2, the easiest way to lower production costs is to use less internal storage.
But with file sizes ever increasing, could it come at the cost of usability?
People are speculating that the new console might use a technology called neural texture compression. If it does, games could take up less storage space than they do on the PlayStation 5.
Okay, so as a gamer, basically what I’ve learned is that Nvidia and AMD have created this cool tech that uses AI to make game textures take up way less space on my graphics card and on my hard drive. It’s called neural texture compression, and it’s awesome because it helps improve performance and lets me fit more games onto my system!
This seems like exactly the type of innovation system architect Mark Cerny and his team at PlayStation are known for, particularly now that memory is becoming so expensive. A possible answer to this challenge could be finding ways to achieve more with limited resources.
This information comes from unconfirmed sources, and although KeplerL2 has generally been reliable in the past, we’re still unsure how accurate his knowledge of Sony’s plans really is.
