Starting April 2nd, the PlayStation 5 will cost $650, but the upcoming PS5 Pro is generating more buzz with its $900 price tag. This pushes consoles closer to the $1,000 mark, leading many to wonder if the PlayStation 6 will continue this trend, given the current cost of technology.
According to leaker KeplerL2, who believes the PlayStation 6 is still on schedule for a 2027 release, the estimated cost to manufacture the console is around $760. They suggest a retail price of $699 could be feasible if Sony provides some financial support. However, they question whether Sony will prioritize this now that Microsoft’s Xbox isn’t posing as much of a competitive threat.
They confirmed the new console will have a 1TB Gen 5 SSD and won’t include a traditional disc drive, which isn’t unexpected since the PS5 Pro also lacks one. We’re now waiting to find out why a vertical stand isn’t being included.
We still don’t know if the PS6 will be significantly more expensive to buy than it costs to make. Only time will tell – Sony hasn’t officially revealed anything yet – but it would be unusual for the PS6 to cost $900 when the PS5 Pro is still selling for that price.
PlayStation has clearly led the way this generation, but with a new CEO, Asha Sharma, at the helm of Microsoft Gaming, things might be different next time around. Rumors suggest the next Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, could be significantly more powerful than the PS6. Even if the performance difference isn’t huge, Microsoft might offer various versions of the console, which could shake things up. We’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out, so keep an eye out for more news.
