Most reports so far suggest that the PlayStation 6 (PS6) will launch somewhere in 2028. Some speculate that Microsoft might want to speed up the release of the next Xbox to compete with the struggling Xbox Series X in the current market, but a new report indicates that a holiday 2028 PS6 launch is not guaranteed and a 2029 release seems more probable at this time.
As a devoted follower, I recently got wind of some intriguing intel from an industry tipster known as Detective Seeds. This individual has a history of delivering accurate scoops about the PS5 Pro, Ghost Recon, and various other projects. Yet, it’s essential to remember that like many insiders, they aren’t infallible. So, I advise you to consume the following information with a healthy dose of skepticism.
As Detective Seeds indicates, the significant PS5 Pro update anticipated in 2026 is expected to pave the way for the following years and sustain PlayStation until 2029, at which point they plan to unveil the PS6. In order to achieve this goal, Sony is rumored to be planning a major marketing effort aimed at encouraging PS4 users to upgrade to the PS5 Pro specifically.
According to the source and YouTube content creator, the PS5 Pro update slated for next year will bring the PS hardware generation up to the anticipated release of the PS6 in 2029. This means that PS4 users may find it beneficial to upgrade to the PS5 Pro, as games will continue to receive updates and enhancements that improve their visuals and performance on the Pro model. This strategy is likely why they plan to launch the PS6 in 2029, as previously suggested by the insider.
The report goes on: “Some folks speculate that PS6 might arrive in 2028, and if the higher-ups decide to delay it for the holiday season of 2028, they certainly can. However, within our engineering department, there’s a preference for launching in 2029. This later date would allow them to fully leverage their technological advancements resulting from partnerships with AMD.
If the PS6 doesn’t arrive until 2029, it’s likely that Microsoft will release their next Xbox ahead of time, as they did with the Xbox 360 when Sony was late. This strategy helped Microsoft establish a strong presence in the market. However, if this prediction is accurate, it seems Sony isn’t concerned about history repeating itself following the underwhelming Xbox One and Xbox Series X generations.
