A 2010 game exclusive to PlayStation Portable (PSP) is making a comeback after 15 years, now with an updated version. Interestingly, this will be the first time this PSP game becomes accessible globally, as it was initially restricted to Japan during its original release – a practice common in the PSP era. Remarkably, this global launch is happening sooner than expected, with a confirmed release date on October 10, which is just around the corner.
As a devout fan, I’m excited to share that the game at hand is none other than the electrifying crossover fighting game, “Ys vs. Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga,” crafted by Nihon Falcom. This thrilling amalgamation brings together characters from both the legendary “Ys” and captivating “Trails” RPG series. In this instance, it’s Refint/games who are developing this fresh release, while our beloved publisher, Falcom, is taking care of the publishing duties.
What’s New?
The final duo is bringing back the outdated PlayStation Portable game with improved graphics, capable of running at 60 frames per second. This enhanced version will also offer couch and online multiplayer options for the first time, as well as a new jump mechanic to revolutionize the gameplay experience. Last but not least, since the PSP game is now being released in English, it will feature English voiceovers.
Platforms
Indeed, unlike what some might expect, Ys vs. Trails in the Sky: Alternative Saga won’t make a comeback as a PSP game, maintaining its PlayStation exclusivity. Instead, the game will reappear on October 10th, available for PC and Nintendo Switch, alongside PS4 and PS5 platforms. At present, there’s no news regarding an Xbox version or a potential Nintendo Switch 2 adaptation. It’s worth noting that while a new PlayStation handheld would be a great fit for this release, as of now, we have no information about its potential launch date.
Who Is This For?
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say, re-releasing an obscure 15-year-old game might sound like a casual move, but this release could be something special. Although they might seem niche in today’s gaming landscape, the Ys and Trails series have diehard fanbases that are eager for more. Yet, it remains to be seen how many of these passionate RPG enthusiasts will venture into the realm of fighting games. The developers haven’t revealed all the reasons behind this revival just yet, but there’s a possibility they’re cooking up a crossover fighting game that brings together these two iconic RPG series. Regarding the PSP, this release is joining another 2006 PSP game set for a comeback soon. Unfortunately, not much else is happening with the PSP library at the moment.
After considering all points, as usual, don’t hesitate to share your thoughts below, or jump right into the discussion in the ComicBook Forum. Are you planning to play the remastered version of the 2010 PSP game when it comes out next month on October 10?
