Pump.fun faces backlash over harmful content on livestream feature

As a researcher with a background in both technology and psychology, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent developments surrounding Pump.fun. Having spent years studying the intersection of digital platforms and human behavior, it is painfully clear that this decentralized memecoin platform has become a breeding ground for harmful and potentially dangerous content.

The platform Pump.fun, designed for generating Solana-based meme tokens, has become a subject of controversy following accusations that some users transmitted distressing and aggressive behavior via the platform’s live streaming function.

Pump.fun serves as a decentralized space where users can design Solana-backed meme tokens. Additionally, they have the opportunity to boost their coins within the Pump.fun community by leveraging tools like live streaming.

Nevertheless, the platform has been under fire from cryptocurrency enthusiasts who are advocating for tighter moderation or even the discontinuation of the live streaming function due to certain issues.

Pump.fun livestreams getting “out of control”

On November 25th, the Pudgy Penguins safety project manager, Beau, drew attention to a user during a live stream on Pump.fun who had expressed an intention to take their own life if their coin didn’t reach a particular market capitalization.

Beau encouraged Pump.fun to step in, halt the live broadcast, and offer assistance to the person involved. Furthermore, he suggested that Pump.fun should completely discontinue its live streaming service as it has become unmanageable.

As a researcher, I’ve come across troubling accounts where some users have made threats, such as expressing intentions to use violence. Within one community, a user was reported for being shot outside a window whenever their digital coin increased in value. Furthermore, several users have shared reports of a child threatening to harm family members if a certain token didn’t reach a specific price target. Additionally, one individual flagged another who claimed they would resort to school shootings if their meme-based coin did not increase in value. These instances underscore the need for increased vigilance and responsible behavior within our digital communities.

Some community users have criticized the livestream function, referring to it as a “stream of criminal acts.” A user from X asked Pump.fun to disable the feature until effective moderation mechanisms are established. They argued that broadcasting one’s own immorality is not admirable or original by saying, “Streaming your own depravity for the world to see isn’t virtuous or unique.

Pump.fun team “moderates” illicit content

In response to the criticisms levied against him, the anonymous head of Pump.fun, known as Alon, listened to the community’s worries yet stood firm in justifying the platform’s attempts to maintain order and moderation.

Alon stated that the Pump.fun team is responsible for overseeing images, videos, live streams, and comments posted on the Pump.fun platform.

“We have a large team of moderators working around the clock and an internal team of engineers that’s working on helping us deal with increased scale of coins, streams, and comments.”

As a dedicated crypto investor, I’ve always prioritized moderation from day one, ensuring our community remains safe and secure. Rest assured, we’re relentlessly working to tackle any instances of illicit content that might arise on our platform.

Despite Pump.fun asserting they regulate inappropriate content, the public is requesting greater openness and swift actions to block such transmissions. So far, there’s been no response from the platform regarding the potential implementation of extra safety measures or modifications to their livestream service.
