Quake 3 Arena Remaster Might Get Announced During QuakeCon 2025 – Rumour

It appears that Nightdive Studios, recognized for their efforts in preserving video games through remasters of iconic titles, could be planning to re-release classic versions of the _Quake_ series with updated graphics and gameplay. Although they haven’t confirmed anything officially this year, a hint dropped during one of their recent live streams suggests that at least _Quake 3 Arena_ will receive a remaster.

According to Reddit user kjurban’s observation during a recent Twitch livestream by Nightdive, the pinned comment read, “Everyone, or rather Orbb, will be focusing on that announcement, hahaha,” hinting at the studio preparing to unveil its upcoming project. To provide some background, Orbb is one of the playable characters from Quake 3 Arena, characterized by being a large eye on a compact metal frame and two leg-like structures resembling organic matter.

The upcoming QuakeCon is expected to be the venue for an announcement by Nightdive Studios. Historically, this annual event has been a hub for announcements of both modern and classic games developed by id Software. Notably, it was at QuakeCon where Nightdive Studios unveiled their enhanced version of the classic shooter “Quake 2” in 2023.

Given Nightdive Studio’s past success in reviving classic games for contemporary players, ensuring they run smoothly on modern hardware, it appears that they would be the ideal candidate for resurrecting the multiplayer-exclusive version of Quake 3 Arena.

Back in 1999, I found myself diving headfirst into a gaming revolution known as Quake 3 Arena. Unlike its predecessors, this game bucked the trend by being multiplayer-exclusive only, offering a single-player experience where you battled against AI opponents on the same multiplayer maps and modes we all enjoyed. As was typical of id Software at that time, Quake 3 Arena served as a pioneer in introducing several graphical technologies that would soon become industry standards. These innovations included spline-based curved surfaces for more dynamic level design, along with advanced AI featuring various difficulty options to test my gaming skills.

Back in its day, Quake 3 Arena garnered significant popularity, eventually fostering a dedicated player community that persists today via Quake Live. Over the years, it received substantial support from both id Software, with the launch of the Quake 3 Team Arena expansion pack, which introduced various team-oriented game modes and maps, as well as from the community itself, who created numerous custom maps and modifications for the game.
