For approximately six years, a new Quentin Tarantino film hadn’t graced the big screen until “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” was released. Although the movie earned nearly $400 million and picked up two Oscars, there has been little news from him since then. In 2022, Tarantino hinted at his upcoming project, which would be his first foray into television – an eight-episode miniseries named “The Movie Critic,” set in 1970s Los Angeles. Tarantino assured that “The Movie Critic” would be unrelated to his last film, but he had cast Brad Pitt, who he collaborated with on “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” However, as per recent updates, it appears that “The Movie Critic” has been cancelled, and Tarantino shared the reasons for this cancellation during an episode of the “The Church of Tarantino” podcast.
He expressed that it felt overly similar to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” set in 1969 Los Angeles. He confessed his enthusiasm for dramatizing his work during pre-production waned, partly due to the fact he was already applying the techniques he mastered while working on “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” This included pondering ways to portray 1969 Los Angeles without relying heavily on CGI.
In several of Quentin Tarantino’s movies, the backdrop shifts dramatically across historical eras, like World War II Germany in “Inglorious Basterds” and the pre-Civil War South in “Django Unchained.” However, revisiting familiar landscapes led him to abandon the project, as he explained, “I had already explored, to some extent, how to make L.A. look older in time.
Despite not encountering significant cinematic obstacles in making “The Movie Critic“, it appears that Quentin Tarantino found the narrative’s theme and core idea particularly hard to solve, much like trying to crack open a difficult nut.
Regarding ‘The Movie Critic’, I must admit I’m quite fond of it. However, I set myself a task while working on it – could I breathe life into what many consider the most mundane profession and create an engaging film? After all, who would want to watch a show or movie about a movie critic?” – This paraphrase maintains the essence of Tarantino’s statement while making it more accessible for a broader audience.
What’s Next for Quentin Tarantino?
In simpler terms, the filmmaker (Quentin Tarantino) had announced that he intended to direct ten movies in total, with his current project being his last one. Despite wrapping up his career as a director, Tarantino is still actively involved in the film industry. He’s working on a spin-off of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” titled “The Adventures of Cliff Booth,” for Netflix, but this time it’s David Fincher who’s directing the film. Interestingly, Brad Pitt, who played the character Cliff Booth in the original movie and won an Academy Award for his performance, will be reprising his role in the spin-off.
Quentin Tarantino intends to stage a play in London’s West End next year, but this shouldn’t be seen as an attempt to steer clear of filmmaking; rather, it’s a different creative venture he’s exploring before returning to directing films.
Tarantino expressed his frustration, saying it’s odd to hear casual analysts discussing mental health issues as if they truly understand him, particularly concerning his upcoming tenth film. He then mimicked the reactions of some fans, imagining them exclaiming about his supposed vulnerability regarding his legacy and career. However, he assured everyone that he is not paralyzed with fear, but rather confident in himself.
Based on his past work, whatever Quentin Tarantino decides to direct next – whether it’s his final movie or not – is sure to be worth the anticipation.
