As a huge film fan, I wasn’t surprised to see Django Unchained become a massive hit! It made almost $450 million around the world, which is incredible considering it cost around $100 million to make. It actually became Quentin Tarantino’s most successful film ever, and unbelievably, the highest-grossing Western of all time. Plus, it got a lot of recognition from the Academy, scoring five nominations, including one for Best Picture.
Django Unchained’s Violent Script Was a Source of Controversy for the Tarantino Film
The film sparked debate among viewers and critics, and wasn’t without controversy. Some critics objected to the script’s excessive violence and use of racial slurs, especially the graphic depiction of violence against enslaved people. However, others argued that these elements were necessary to accurately portray the historical context of the time period in the United States.
Spike Lee publicly criticized the film, stating he wouldn’t watch it because of its disturbing portrayal of slavery. He explained, “It’s disrespectful to my ancestors. That’s just my opinion… I’m not speaking for anyone else.” Jesse Williams, an actor on Grey’s Anatomy and an activist, also voiced concerns, arguing the film wasn’t historically accurate in its depiction of enslaved people’s everyday lives.
Django Unchained arrives on Starz on Jan. 25, 2026.
