Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis to debut on Ronin in early 2025

As a seasoned crypto investor with a soft spot for nostalgia, I must say the announcement of Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis on Sky Mavis’ Ronin Network has me quite intrigued. Having played Ragnarok Online back in the day and witnessed its massive success, it’s exciting to see this classic MMORPG make a comeback in Web3 format.

Genesis.

New life for an old standby

Originating from the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) surge of the 2000s, Ragnarok Online has captivated more than 100 million players and amassed over $2 billion in earnings. The next iteration, Web3-based, is set to materialize through a collaboration between Ronin and blockchain gaming platform Zentry. The specific details of the partnership agreement between Sky Mavis and Zentry remain undisclosed.

In September 2023, Zentry unveiled the game Ragnarok Landverse. Since then, it has amassed more than 400,000 players and made $18.9 million in earnings. It saw significant success in Southeast Asia. Importantly, Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis is not a sequel to Ragnarok Landverse. Ronin clarified this on X platform.

“This is a fresh new experience exclusively available on Ronin. Today, Ragnarok Landverse has other live servers and legions of players. These servers will also migrate to Ronin at a later date. For now, note that any existing Landverse assets will not be usable in the Genesis experience on Ronin.”

In August, Zentry, having successfully secured $150 million in an early funding round, plans to assume the role of a validator node within the Ronin network. Furthermore, it will connect its ZENT token with Ronin and introduce reward-based liquidity pools on the Katana decentralized exchange that Ronin operates.

Ragnarok comes in many forms

On December 13th, Zentry debuted their Nexus Player Portal, welcoming the Ronin community aboard. This platform provides features including a universal digital identity, a perpetual rewards system, and seamless cross-platform compatibility. In a released statement, Zentry’s CEO Jarindr Thitadilaka expressed:

“Together, we’re paving the way for future Biggest gaming IPs [intellectual properties] to transition into Web3. […] We are fully committed to making our vision of onboarding 50 million global users to Web3 gaming a reality.”

Boasting over 3 million daily transactions and approximately 4.7 million monthly active users, largely due to the popular Axie Infinity game, Ronin network demonstrates its ability to handle high volumes of data. Currently, it’s home to Ragnarok: Monster World, showcasing its scalability potential.

In November, Sky Mavis announced that they were letting go of 21% of their employees. They explained this move was necessary to allocate resources more effectively, suggesting a possible debut of a new game in the year 2025.

The various renditions of Ragnarok draw inspiration from the South Korean comic series titled Ragnarök, loosely based on ancient Norse mythology.

Ragnarok Landverse hails from Ragnarok Online, a game initially developed by South Korea’s Gravity Interactive in 2002. Gravity collaborates with Maxion Labs, a part of which is controlled by Zentry.
