Ranking Spider-Man’s First 10 Villains By Power

Spider-Man is unique among Marvel heroes because many of his earliest villains are still well-known today, even decades after his first appearance. He first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15, where he encountered a nameless burglar and let him escape. Tragically, that same burglar later killed Uncle Ben, which motivated Spider-Man to become a crime fighter. He reappeared in Amazing Spider-Man #1, initially clashing with the Fantastic Four as he tried to join their team. But it wasn’t until a short story within that issue that Spider-Man truly faced his first recurring enemy.

Let’s take a look at Spider-Man’s first year of adventures in Marvel Comics. Here’s a ranking of the first ten villains he fought (excluding the initial thief), ordered from most to least powerful.

10) The Enforcers

When Spider-Man first battled the Enforcers in The Amazing Spider-Man #10, they were labeled his most ruthless enemies. But they weren’t actually that dangerous. The group, led by Big Man and consisting of Montana, Fancy Dan, and Ox, proved to be no real challenge for Spider-Man. They lack any special powers and don’t pose a significant threat to him.

9) Tinkerer

The Tinkerer first appeared as a villain in a backup story within The Amazing Spider-Man #2, the same issue that introduced the Vulture. Because of the Vulture’s debut, the Tinkerer isn’t often remembered as one of Spider-Man’s original foes. It also didn’t help that he was initially employed by Quentin Beck (though Mysterio wouldn’t officially appear until later). While a gifted scientist, the Tinkerer has always been a supporting villain, working under the direction of others.

8) Living Brain

The Living Brain first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #8 as an early story exploring anxieties about technology. Dr. Petty brought the Living Brain to Midtown High as a demonstration of a problem-solving machine. After two thieves damaged it, the machine gained intelligence and began to run wild through the school. Though not malicious, the Living Brain was a powerful robot capable of causing harm, even by accident.

7) Chameleon

Interestingly, Spider-Man’s first supervillain was the Chameleon. He debuted in a short story within The Amazing Spider-Man #1, and his plan was to damage Spider-Man’s public image by using his incredible disguises. The Chameleon learned Spider-Man was trying to earn money by joining the Fantastic Four, so he started posing as Spider-Man and committing robberies. This led the police to believe Spider-Man was the criminal, allowing the Chameleon to continue his crimes until Spider-Man could clear his name. While dangerous, the Chameleon isn’t particularly powerful – his main strength is his ability to disguise himself.

6) Vulture

In the comics, Vulture was the first villain Spider-Man fought who relied on advanced technology. He first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #2, equipped with wings that let him fly. Vulture was known for publicly boasting about his crimes, even announcing when and where he would rob people. Spider-Man eventually defeated him by using his own scientific skills to disable Vulture’s wings and get him arrested. Over time, Vulture became one of Spider-Man’s most frequent foes and even played a part in forming the Sinister Six.

5) Doctor Octopus

Doctor Octopus is often considered Spider-Man’s ultimate foe, his most iconic and persistent enemy. While he’s a brilliant and older scientific mind turned villain – a stark contrast to the young, heroic Peter Parker – Doc Ock isn’t actually one of Spider-Man’s most powerful enemies. His strength comes primarily from his incredibly strong, mechanical tentacles, but he lacks the inherent superpowers possessed by many of Spidey’s other foes. Essentially, Doc Ock is a master of intellect and technology, making him a perfect foil for the web-slinger, but not necessarily his biggest physical threat.

4) Electro

Electro first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #9. He’s unique from other villains on this list because he genuinely has superpowers. Originally a power line worker, he was shocked by electricity, but instead of being killed, he gained the ability to control it. In their first encounter, Electro easily defeated Spider-Man by simply shocking him unconscious. However, Spider-Man was able to overcome Electro with an insulated costume, gloves, and the use of water. While Electro became more powerful over time, he never managed to truly defeat Spider-Man.

3) Lizard

The Lizard is arguably Spider-Man’s most relatable villain because, unlike many others, he didn’t start out wanting to be evil. Curt Connors was a scientist who lost an arm and hoped to regrow it using reptile DNA. Unfortunately, the experiment succeeded in restoring his arm, but also transformed him into the powerful and destructive Lizard. He’s physically the strongest of Spider-Man’s initial rogues gallery, and Peter Parker often tries to cure him rather than simply defeat him. Over time, the Lizard has become increasingly sympathetic, though some stories still portray him as a frightening foe.

2) Sandman

Sandman first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #4 as a criminal with the ability to transform into sand. His powers were particularly impressive, making him one of Spider-Man’s most formidable early foes. He could become intangible as sand, and then solidify into a nearly impenetrable form for attacks. Later, it was discovered that Sandman was effectively immortal due to his abilities, making him an incredibly dangerous and persistent enemy for Spider-Man.

1) Doctor Doom

Surprisingly, Doctor Doom was only the sixth supervillain Spider-Man ever faced in the comics, first appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #5. Because of negative press from J. Jonah Jameson’s newspaper, Doom initially thought Spider-Man was another villain and tried to team up with him. When Spider-Man refused, Doom attacked, and Spider-Man couldn’t win. Doom escaped, proving why he’s considered one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe – far stronger than any of Spider-Man’s first ten foes, as shown in One World Under Doom.
