Developer nDreams Elevation and publisher nDreams have just unveiled a new trailer for their highly anticipated VR game, Reach. The trailer, which premiered during PC Gaming Show – Tokyo Direct, showcases the world of Reach and briefly explains the history of the civilization responsible for the impressive underground structures players will discover in the game.
Much of the story in Reach will center around the underground city of Ferra. This city was built by artificial beings created by humans long ago, and, as the narrator points out, they inherited both the strengths and weaknesses of their creators. The narrator states, “Vanity gave way to envy,” and continues, “Envy to war. And our once great city turned to ruin.”
The trailer not only highlights the diverse underground locations within the city of Ferra, but also gives players a look at the enemies they’ll encounter on their journey. These foes vary greatly, from standard close-combat soldiers to massive creatures wielding powerful weapons. Finally, the trailer concludes with a display of the fast-paced parkour and action gameplay of Reach.
Reach will be available on PC VR (through Steam), Meta Quest 3, and PlayStation VR2 starting October 16. This release date was revealed in a trailer released last month, which also showed off gameplay and explained how the game’s main character ends up trapped within the underground city of Ferra.
The main story of Reach centers around the protagonist, an unwilling adventurer, as she attempts to obtain a “Power Core” – a vital resource for humanity. Her quest leads her into the ruins of Ferra, where she must battle ancient, awakened machines to stay alive.
Reach heavily focuses on movement and exploration. nDreams Elevation explains that the VR game uses full-body tracking to create a truly immersive experience. Players will navigate the world with quick, fluid parkour, but also through other methods like rock climbing, ziplines, and a grappling hook. The game also provides unique tools, such as arrows that can be fired into walls to create temporary footholds, allowing players to climb them.
In battle, players mainly use a bow with various arrow types. These arrows don’t just add elemental damage; they also have special effects, such as dealing extra damage to vulnerable areas or igniting enemies. Besides the bow, players can also utilize guns and a shield.
You can also apparently take guns from defeated enemies, and then use them to briefly distract opponents by throwing them after you’ve used all the ammunition. The shield is designed to be a strong defensive tool, letting the player block a significant amount of damage coming from one direction.
