Recasting All Fox X-Men For the MCU

The X-Men have been major players in Marvel’s movie universe for over twenty years, with their own film series that had its share of hits and misses. While some of the X-Men movies weren’t great, the franchise as a whole was impressive, successfully bringing many beloved characters and stories from the comics to life on the big screen. Now that the original X-Men movie series has ended and these heroes are joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s exciting to imagine their future in even bigger and more spectacular films.

The X-Men movies featured a lot of memorable characters, and some were even played by different actors across various timelines. But if the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) wants to create its own versions of these characters, they’ll need to find new actors to play them. Here’s a look at the key X-Men characters, reimagined with a new cast for the MCU.

10) Mark Strong as Professor X

Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X, is a hugely important character in the X-Men films, appearing in almost every movie throughout Fox’s franchise. He’s become a key figure in Marvel movies overall, going beyond just leading the X-Men. Because of this, it’s critical that the Marvel Cinematic Universe finds the perfect actor to play him when introducing the new X-Men team.

While several actors could play Professor X, Mark Strong seems like an especially great choice. He’s already familiar with superhero movies, having been in DC films, and he naturally possesses Professor X’s key trait. More importantly, Strong has the strong, subtle acting skills needed to portray this complex character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

9) Jason Isaacs as Magneto

Magneto is arguably the most challenging X-Men character to recast. Both Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender brilliantly portrayed the character, making him a standout in the franchise. The Marvel Cinematic Universe will need an actor who can capture Magneto’s complicated personality, as well as his strength and belief in what he’s doing.

Jason Isaacs would be an excellent pick to play Magneto in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He physically resembles previous actors who’ve played the role, like Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender, and is a versatile performer capable of convincingly portraying both villainous and heroic characters. This range makes him well-suited for the part if it’s ever recast.

8) Daniel Radcliffe as Beast

Several X-Men characters weren’t treated well in the Fox films, and Beast was definitely one of them. While Kelsey Grammer first played him in the poorly received X-Men: The Last Stand, Nicholas Hoult took over the role in the prequel movies. Unfortunately, Beast never got the focus he deserved, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a chance to fix that.

While many fans have imagined Daniel Radcliffe as Wolverine, he’d surprisingly be an excellent fit for the role of Beast. Beyond his experience with large film series, Radcliffe is known for being a versatile actor who embraces challenges. His natural accent and established popularity would make him an unexpected, yet fantastic, choice for Beast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

7) Victoria Pedretti as Rogue

Rogue was initially presented as a key character in Fox’s X-Men films, but after appearing prominently in the first two movies, her role diminished and she was largely left out of the later prequels. Because Rogue is such a powerful character in the comics, it’s vital that Marvel’s MCU gets her casting right and gives her a significant role when they introduce the X-Men into their cinematic universe.

Victoria Pedretti is a fan favorite to play Rogue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While she’s become well-known for her work in horror and thriller shows, she definitely has the acting range to portray Rogue’s complex and often heartbreaking story. Beyond looking the part, casting Pedretti as Rogue could also allow her to move beyond roles she’s recently become associated with, like those in Mike Flanagan’s projects and the Netflix series You.

6) Anna Diop as Storm

I always felt Storm deserved more screen time in the Fox X-Men movies. Halle Berry was fantastic in the original trilogy, but then Alexandra Shipp didn’t really get the chance to shine in the prequels. As a huge fan of the comics, where Storm is such a central figure, I really hope Marvel prioritizes getting her casting just right when the X-Men join the MCU. It’s so important to do her character justice!

Anna Diop would be an excellent pick to play a powerful mutant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She’s best known for her role as Starfire in the TV series Titans, where she demonstrated strong presence and leadership skills even alongside many other heroes. Because she isn’t as famous as some other actors considered for the part, she might have a better chance of being cast by Marvel.

5) Austin Butler as Gambit

Gambit is a fan-favorite X-Men character, and many feel he was poorly handled in the Fox films. Taylor Kitsch played him briefly in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but that version didn’t quite capture the character’s essence. While Channing Tatum recently appeared as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, there’s another actor who would be ideal if the character is reintroduced in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Austin Butler is quickly becoming a major star in Hollywood. He’s already impressed audiences with his acting in different types of movies, and he clearly has the talent to play the charming and confident character of Gambit. Plus, he physically fits the role perfectly, making him a strong and exciting pick for the part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

4) Dylan O’Brien as Iceman

Several X-Men are incredibly powerful and could significantly impact the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Iceman is definitely among them. The previous movies didn’t fully showcase his potential, despite Shawn Ashmore’s good portrayal. The MCU has an opportunity to fix this, as Iceman was a missed opportunity in the earlier X-Men films.

While many actors could play Iceman well, Dylan O’Brien stands out as a particularly strong choice. He’s already familiar with big franchise films, and he has the youthful appearance and heroic presence that the role requires. O’Brien could truly deliver a great live-action Iceman, and casting him would be a brilliant move for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

3) Taron Egerton as Wolverine

Hugh Jackman has famously played Wolverine in every movie appearance so far, with just a few exceptions in multiverse storylines. While Jackman’s portrayal has been legendary, most fans expect Marvel to find a new actor to play Wolverine as they build their X-Men team. It will be a tough task to find someone who can match Jackman’s performance, but one actor is widely considered the perfect choice for the role.

Taron Egerton has long been a popular choice among fans to take on the role of Wolverine, and many still think he’d be perfect if the part is ever recast. He has the right physique for the character and has demonstrated his ability to handle action roles convincingly. He’s one of the few actors who could realistically fill Hugh Jackman’s shoes, and casting him as Wolverine would finally satisfy a widespread desire among fans.

2) Saoirse Ronan as Jean Grey

Jean Grey is a central character in the X-Men and one of Marvel’s most gifted telepaths. She’s been a part of the team since the beginning, and her storyline is one of the most important in the comics. She also had a significant role in the X-Men movies produced by Fox. Finding an actress to follow in the footsteps of Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner will be challenging, but several talented actors could potentially take on the role.

Saoirse Ronan is a strong contender to play Jean Grey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Throughout her career, she’s proven herself as a talented dramatic actress, while also showing she can handle comedic roles. Her impressive range makes her a reliable choice to portray the complexities of Jean Grey and do the character’s important storylines justice.

1) Patrick Schwarzenegger as Cyclops

Cyclops is a key X-Men character who will be important in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming stories about mutants. While James Marsden previously played Cyclops in the X-Men films from Fox – and is even returning for Avengers: Doomsday – the MCU will need to cast a new actor to take on the role of this iconic hero, as both Marsden and Tye Sheridan played the part in the previous Fox movies.

We’ve seen a lot of great actors considered for the part, but Patrick Schwarzenegger really shines as the best choice. He has the ideal physique and appearance to play Scott Summers, and he’s already familiar with the superhero genre thanks to his work on Gen V, a spin-off of The Boys. He instantly looks the part, and he has the talent to make Cyclops a compelling character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
