The Star Trek TV series are doing incredibly well, with new seasons appearing regularly on Paramount+. However, Star Trek movies have struggled to find success. While Quentin Tarantino once tried to create a new film in the Star Trek universe, that project, like many others aiming to bring the Enterprise back to theaters, ultimately failed. Recent news suggests Paramount may no longer be planning a final movie with Chris Pine and the original cast.
The decision to move away from the timeline established by J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek film is disappointing, considering how much the newer shows rely on it. It’s difficult to picture Star Trek being as popular today without that initial reboot. However, dwelling on the past isn’t productive, so it’s time to focus on what’s next. Here are seven actors who could perfectly portray the original Enterprise crew in a future Star Trek movie.
7) Ivanna Sakhno as Pavel Chekov

Even if the actors from the Kelvin Timeline were to reprise their roles, the loss of Anton Yelchin, who played Pavel Chekov, would still be deeply felt – he sadly passed away just before Star Trek Beyond came out. Finding someone to take on Chekov now requires a fresh approach, and Ivanna Sakhno seems like the perfect choice.
In Star Wars: Ahsoka, Ivana Sakhno plays Shin Hati, a talented Force-user who falls on a dark path and allies with Baylan Skoll. Sakhno’s ability to portray a complex character will allow her to bring a similar intensity to her role as Chekov, transforming him from a simply charming and intelligent person into someone who recognizes the necessity of difficult decisions.
6) Mackenyu as Hikaru Sulu

Even though he wasn’t in many scenes, John Cho was brilliant as Hikaru Sulu, the Enterprise’s helmsman. He was a steadying presence for the crew, always ready with helpful advice, but also capable of taking charge when necessary.
Mackenyu is an actor who consistently delivers strong performances when it matters most, as seen in his role in the live-action film JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable – Chapter 1. In the Netflix series One Piece, his character opposes Roronoa Zoro. While Zoro and Mackenyu’s character may appear different, they share a core value: a willingness to protect their friends at all costs, even if it means sacrificing themselves.
5) Jaz Sinclair as Nyota Uhura

Zoe Saldaña has already become a major star in several huge franchises, including Marvel, Pirates of the Caribbean, and James Cameron’s Avatar. However, many fans consider her role as Nyota Uhura, the communications officer in the Star Trek trilogy, to be her strongest performance.
Replacing Zoe Saldaña as Uhura will be a challenge, but Jaz Sinclair, known for her role in the show Gen V (a The Boys spinoff), seems like a great fit. Her character, Marie Moreau, is incredibly capable and isn’t afraid to speak her mind, qualities that really echo Uhura’s strength and decisiveness.
4) Jack Lowden as Montgomery “Scotty” Scott

What makes Scotty so admirable is his unwavering loyalty, even if it sometimes leads him into trouble. He wholeheartedly trusts his leaders and will bravely defend them. That said, Scotty isn’t without flaws; he occasionally makes mistakes.
River Cartwright from the Apple TV+ show Slow Horses is another character known for getting into trouble, but always managing to succeed. Jack Lowden, who plays River, has a knack for turning things around, and Scotty could really benefit from that same good fortune in the next movie.
3) Cooper Hoffman as Leonard “Bones” McCoy

You know, Bones reminds me a lot of Scotty – both are incredibly dedicated to their jobs and the crew. But honestly, Bones complains way more! And he’s got a good reason to – as the ship’s doctor, he’s responsible for everyone’s health and well-being, which is a huge weight on his shoulders. Still, even with all that pressure, he always manages to crack a joke and lighten the mood when it’s needed most. He’s a real lifesaver, in more ways than one!
In the film The Long Walk, Cooper Hoffman plays Ray Garraty, one of many young men competing in a grueling walking contest for a chance to win wealth. The stakes are incredibly high – if they fall behind, they face deadly consequences. Throughout the journey, Garraty attempts to maintain a positive attitude. Hoffman’s ability to handle pressure is reminiscent of Scottie on The Enterprise, always stepping up when a new alien danger appears.
2) Asa Butterfield as Spock

When Zachary Quinto was cast as Spock in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek, many people doubted he could live up to Leonard Nimoy’s iconic performance. However, Quinto quickly proved them wrong, delivering memorable performances in all three Star Trek films.
Replacing Quinto will likely be as difficult as replacing Nimoy, but Asa Butterfield should be the first actor considered. He’s proven in Sex Education that he can convincingly portray characters who are socially awkward, and he naturally projects an air of intelligence.
1) David Jonsson as James T. Kirk

James T. Kirk is central to any Star Trek film featuring the original crew – he’s the captain of the Enterprise, after all. Playing him well requires someone who can convincingly challenge those in charge, and it’s a demanding role that needs a truly versatile actor. Luckily, there’s a promising actor who seems perfectly suited to the part.
David Jonsson, who acted alongside Hoffman in The Long Walk, is usually a reassuring and inspiring presence. But he’s also capable of intense performances, as seen in Alien: Romulus. Adding him to the cast of the next Star Trek film would immediately boost its reputation, because he’s rapidly establishing himself as one of the most talented actors working today.
