Despite seemingly unlikely circumstances, Hugh Jackman has continued his iconic portrayal of Wolverine within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for over 20 years, starting with the original X-Men film. Recently, Ryan Reynolds’ long-awaited collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine came to fruition in Deadpool & Wolverine. Contrary to expectations, this movie wasn’t meant to be a farewell for Jackman’s mutant character but instead opened up possibilities for future appearances in Avengers films and beyond. However, it’s not feasible to anticipate that Jackman will feature in every upcoming MCU project, especially given the approach of an X-Men reboot by Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s debut of Charles Xavier’s school, you might find a fresh take on Wolverine among his students. Although it’s tough to envision anyone other than Hugh Jackman embodying the role so iconically, change is inevitable in the world of superheroes. Here are five actors who could potentially excel as the new Wolverine in the MCU’s X-Men team.
1) Daniel Radcliffe
Ever since 2011, Daniel Radcliffe has been diligently working to move beyond the Harry Potter image associated with his career. He’s taken on roles in offbeat comedies such as “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” and spine-tingling horror thrillers like “The Woman in Black.” However, he hasn’t revisited a large franchise yet, preferring to take on roles that need minimal commitment. Given the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s enduring popularity, it could be worthwhile for Radcliffe to hop aboard the superhero bandwagon now.
As a dedicated film fan, I must admit that Daniel Radcliffe has a significant advantage when it comes to securing the role of Wolverine. This is largely due to the fact that he stands at 5 feet 5 inches tall, which is remarkably close to the character’s height as depicted in the comics. On the other hand, Hugh Jackman towered over his fellow actors for an impressive 20 years. The upcoming reboot presents a unique opportunity to remind Wolverine that even the mighty must concede at times – he can’t always have it all.
2) Taron Egerton
For years, Taron Egerton has faced questions about his role as Wolverine, and it’s understandable why people would ask. The Welsh actor is often overlooked despite his impressive body of work, which includes a critically acclaimed portrayal of music legend Elton John in Rocketman and demonstrating his action skills in Carry-On and the Kingsman series. So far, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has yet to provide Egerton with a role, but it seems they might have been saving a specific mutant character for him.
Egerton has the talent to match any actor chosen by Schreier and his team for the X-Men reboot. Furthermore, he possesses an understated charisma that ensures he won’t overshadow others, much like how Jackman never hogged the limelight in Fox’s X-Men films.
3) Glen Powell
Glen Powell appears to be experiencing an unmatched career surge following his role in “Top Gun: Maverick”. It seems like there’s another project being announced about him every fortnight. In the year 2025, he will lead two highly anticipated productions – Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man” and the Hulu series “Chad Powers”, which is inspired by a character conjured up by former NFL quarterback Eli Manning for his ESPN series.
For Powell, it seems only natural to consider taking on a superhero character next. Some think he’d be exceptional as Cyclops, but others argue that he could excel even more in the role of Wolverine. After all, his portrayal of the ruthless Gary Johnson in ‘Hit Man’ certainly suggests a strong affinity for playing intense, violent characters – a trait often associated with the iconic Wolverine character.
4) Henry Cavill
Despite donning the Superman cape for DC, Henry Cavill found himself constantly fielding requests from fans to take on the role of Wolverine. The public clamor was relentless, and he eventually agreed to give it a try in Deadpool & Wolverine, making a brief appearance as “Cavillrine” during a montage. If Cavill follows John Krasinski’s path, who played Reed Richards to please fans in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he might find himself in the same position. However, it’s important to note that his opportunities shouldn’t be ruled out completely.
In a single captivating moment, Cavill demonstrated his ability to embody the essence that makes Wolverine exceptional. While superhero roles may not hold the same charm for Cavill as they once did, it’s unlikely that Marvel Studios will treat Wolverine with the same mismanagement DC inflicted upon Superman (Man of Steel).
5) Josh Segarra
To give other characters their moment in the spotlight, Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) producers might consider casting a lesser-known actor for Wolverine. If they decide to go this route, Josh Segarra could be an excellent choice. He is well-known for portraying the Green Arrow villain Prometheus on The CW’s Arrow.
In the Arrowverse, Segarra delved into his darker self when portraying his character’s torment towards Oliver Queen for his role in the death of his father. The Marvel Cinematic Universe could make use of his talents by equipping Segarra with claws and pitting him against every villain who threatens mutants in the MCU.
