A surprising new video game has become the fourth best-selling of all time, surpassing the lifetime sales of games from major companies like Capcom, Square Enix, and Konami.
Looking at the best-selling video games ever, you won’t find many recent titles. The first game from the 2020s doesn’t appear until number 14: Animal Crossing: New Horizons, with almost 50 million copies sold. Reaching the top of this list takes a lot of time and sales, and no company understands that better than Rockstar Games.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Has Outsold Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Everyone was focused on the news that Grand Theft Auto 6 would be released in November 2026, but Take-Two also shared some sales figures. They announced that Red Dead Redemption 2, first launched in 2018, has now sold 79 million copies – more than any other game released in the last seven years.
Recent sales data shows that Red Dead Redemption 2 is now the fourth best-selling video game ever, moving Mario Kart 8 Deluxe down to fifth place with 78.02 million copies sold. If Red Dead Redemption 2 sees another boost in sales—perhaps with a release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S—it could potentially climb to number three, surpassing Wii Sports and its 82.9 million copies.
Red Dead Redemption 2’s Success Has Flown Under The Radar
Games like Fortnite and Roblox are incredibly popular and generate a lot of revenue, largely because they’re free to play. However, they’re often excluded from lists of top-selling games because those lists usually only count games that you have to buy upfront. Red Dead Redemption 2, being a paid game, has consistently seen strong sales over the years.
As a gamer, it’s no surprise to me that Minecraft is the best-selling game ever – seriously, 350 million copies! Right behind it is another Rockstar hit, Grand Theft Auto 5, with 220 million. It’s kinda crazy how popular GTA 5 is, it’s even overshadowed Red Dead Redemption 2. It feels like Rockstar is already completely focused on Grand Theft Auto 6 and has moved on from the wild west for now.
