Given how much money Rockstar makes from GTA Online, it’s surprising they haven’t put more work into updating their older games. The recent PS5 release of Red Dead Redemption feels incredibly basic, offering very few improvements or new features.
This release includes both the original Red Dead Redemption story and the Undead Nightmare expansion, similar to the PS4 re-release a few years ago. If you already own the PS4 version, you can upgrade to this one for free. It’s also playable with a PS Plus Extra or GTA+ subscription.

The game costs £49.99 or $49.99 if you buy it on its own. However, for a limited time – 10 days – you can get it bundled with Red Dead Redemption 2 on the PS Store.
While now available on PS5, the game’s current-generation version doesn’t fully utilize the console’s power. It offers 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, along with better visuals in the distance, HDR support, and slightly improved image quality. However, those are the main upgrades.
The PlayStation Store description says the game supports the PS5’s DualSense controller features like vibration and adaptive triggers. However, our testing didn’t find any evidence that these features are actually used in the game.
You can transfer your saved game progress from your PS4, letting you continue where you stopped. However, some players are reporting that trophies you earned on PS4 aren’t automatically appearing on the PS5 version of the game.
Our thoughts on the original PS4 version still apply to this PS5 release. It’s fantastic to finally have Red Dead Redemption running natively on PS5, but the game itself still feels like it could be so much better.
