As a huge Red Dwarf fan, I’ve been following the attempts to revive the show for ages, and it’s exciting to hear some potentially good news! Rob Grant, one of the show’s creators, has just hinted that there’s a renewed possibility of seeing more of the crew of the Red Dwarf on our screens. It’s a small glimmer of hope, but as a fan, it’s enough to get me excited!
Grant and Andrew Marshall are writing a new novel that serves as a prequel to the TV series. It will be released in July and tells the story of Lister, Rimmer, and the crew during a shore leave on Titan, before the events fans know and love.
Grant recently told TopMob he originally envisioned his latest story as a film or TV show, and he hasn’t completely dismissed the possibility of that happening down the line.
When asked about a possible prequel, Grant said he was definitely interested. They had initially developed it as a concept for a TV series and tried to get it produced, but it proved too costly and they weren’t able to find enough support.

The original series starred Craig Charles as Rimmer, Chris Barrie as Lister, Danny John Jules as the Cat, and Robert Llewellyn as Kryten, and it has returned for several revivals over time.
If the potential spin-off series gets made, Grant plans to use a new cast, explaining that the original actors are getting older.
He explained that they would essentially need to start with a new cast. He’d hoped a spin-off focusing on Titan would allow them to introduce fresh versions of the characters Rimmer and Lister, while still giving the original actors opportunities to make appearances in good roles if they were interested.
Everyone agrees – including me – that the fans love the actors in these roles, and I do too. It would feel wrong to anyone watching if different people played those characters. But what can you do? Grant jokingly suggested, maybe AI could be the answer!

Right now, Grant is concentrating on his latest novel, which is a story about Lister and Rimmer enjoying some time off on Titan before the events that kick off the series.
This story takes place in a separate universe, allowing us to use beloved characters in new and unexpected ways. The challenge was creating something original while staying true to the established history and not contradicting what we already know about them.
The project ended up taking us about a year and a half longer than we originally planned, and it was quite complex.
He explained that the new story will involve Lister and Rimmer receiving a warning from the distant future: unless they take action, all realities will cease to exist.
The new novel, Red Dwarf: Titan, will be released in hardback, ebook, and audio formats on July 16, 2026. You can currently watch Red Dwarf on BBC iPlayer.
