Red Eye isn’t aiming for ultra-realistic storytelling – and I really hope that’s true – but a bizarre plot twist at the end of season one was just too much. Consider me officially done with the show.
Detectives Hana Li and Matthew Nolan manage to escape a harrowing flight back to face charges and immediately begin working to uncover a deep conspiracy within the intelligence world, as expected.
During a tense confrontation, Matthew rescues Hana from a dangerous CIA agent, but is severely wounded by a gunshot. While his survival is surprising, what happens afterward is even more extraordinary.
Hana went to see him in the hospital, holding his hand and thanking him for saving her life. Shortly after, he playfully asked if they could go on a date when he was better, but when he looked, Hana had drifted off to sleep.
She’s either actually asleep, or she’s faking it – honestly, that’s what I’d do. Seriously, though, has any romantic storyline ever felt so unimportant?

When Hana first meets Matthew, she immediately dislikes him. She’s deeply disturbed to learn he’s been charged with manslaughter in China after a woman died while he was with her, and the circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear.
As I watched the first season, it really hit me that he was set up! It was great to see the characters rally around him, even while stuck on this incredibly stressful flight. Honestly, the passengers were already driving me crazy with their panic, but knowing there was a murderer hiding somewhere on that plane just added a whole new level of tension!
I might be wrong, but it seemed like Hana and Matthew were becoming close simply because they both wanted to survive. I guess that’s something a lot of people can relate to!
She did touch him gently in the hospital scene, but it was a normal, caring gesture – the kind you’d offer to a close friend, family member, or someone who had risked their life for you.

Dr. Nolan jumping to the conclusion that Hana is interested in him seems like a big overreaction, and it’s inconsiderate of him to make a move on her when she’s trying to rest. That’s a definite warning sign!
It’s been a year and a half since the first season of Red Eye came out, and I’m still puzzling over one scene. Was it just a casual joke, or did the writers unexpectedly add a romantic angle that didn’t really fit the story?
Even the most unbelievable Christmas movies on Netflix would have a hard time turning Hana and Matthew’s recent situation into a romantic comedy, but it would be fun to see them attempt it.
When ITV said Richard Armitage wouldn’t be back for season two of ‘Red Eye,’ it was more of a surprise than a letdown, simply because his character’s story felt complete.
In the Red Eye story, Matthew confessed his feelings to Hana while recovering from pain and under the influence of medication. Thankfully, they’ve been happily together ever since he got better. That’s wonderful!
The show’s new main character, Clay Brody – played by Martin Compston – isn’t the type to propose in a grand gesture at the end. That’s what Lusi says, anyway.
She recently appeared on ITV’s This Morning and commented on how nice it was to see a purely professional relationship between a man and a woman, one that didn’t develop into romance. She described it as ‘refreshing’.
Based on early previews, her account appears genuine. The show reveals a long-standing, intense rivalry between Hana and Clay, going all the way back to their time as police trainees. And thankfully, it wasn’t caused by a romantic relationship gone wrong!
Romantic storylines are very popular in TV dramas, and I’m definitely not saying we should avoid them when developing new shows.
Look, while a little romance can be nice, both in movies and in life, an active crime scene just isn’t the setting for a love story, in my opinion. Maybe they should just get a dating app like everyone else!
