Red Hulk Finally Gets His Glorious Mustache in Captain America 4 Concept Art

Title art for “Captain America: Brave New World” highlights various designs for the Red Hulk character, some featuring facial hair. The YouTube channel The Artbook Collector has shared a video outlining the contents of this art book, providing fans with behind-the-scenes insights into the movie’s production. Several pages are dedicated to Red Hulk, revealing the different looks the creative team explored during development. One concept sketch depicts smoke emanating from Red Hulk’s body, potentially hinting at his fire-like abilities from the comics. Other sketches show Red Hulk with a substantial mustache, a characteristic often associated with Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the comics.

The book showcases different versions of Red Hulk sporting diverse beard styles. Here’s an image captured from the video, have a look:

In the movie “Captain America: Brave New World”, Harrison Ford took over the role of Thaddeus Ross from the late William Hurt. Unlike Hurt’s portrayal, which featured a signature mustache throughout his appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ford appeared clean-shaven. This change was addressed within the story during a conversation between Ross and Sam Wilson, where Ross mentioned he was informed that he would lose the election if he didn’t shave off his mustache.

In the comic books, Thaddeus Ross doesn’t keep his mustache when he turns into the Red Hulk – this was done to maintain an element of surprise about Red Hulk’s true identity. It’s important to note that Thaddeus isn’t the only character who transforms into Red Hulk; there’s also General Robert Maverick, and his version of Red Hulk does sport a mustache.

It’s intriguing to note that multiple designs for Red Hulk were under consideration during the movie-making process. The creative team behind comic book adaptations often experiment with different looks before settling on one that suits the film best. Recently, some concept art from the Thunderbolts project has been released, showcasing various costumes for the main characters, ones that give off a black ops feel. It’s uncertain why the mustached versions of Red Hulk were abandoned; it seems likely that the concept art was created early in the film’s development, before a decision on that aspect was finalized. The filmmakers might have been exploring various designs to help them make an informed choice. In the end, maintaining accuracy to the original source material could have been the reason for discarding the mustached Red Hulk, even though Tim Roth (who played General Ross) kept his mustache, Red Hulk would still appear clean-shaven in the film.

For now, it’s unclear what will happen with Hulks in the MCU as Ross is currently incarcerated and may not transform into a rage monster again. It’s intriguing to think about if Marvel might resurrect the Red Hulk idea at some point, possibly introducing Robert Maverick to live-action. This could potentially offer them a chance to explore one of these mustached characters.
