Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s 2024 film, Red One, starring Chris Evans, is becoming incredibly popular. As the holiday season gets underway, more and more people are watching it, quickly making it a top 10 movie in the U.S.
As of December 23rd, the movie Red One is the second most popular title on Prime Video, moving up one position from the day before, according to FlixPatrol. It’s currently just behind the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Completing the top 5 on Prime Video are Oh. What. Fun (scheduled for 2025), Candy Cane Lane (2023), and Merv (also planned for 2025).
Even with a star-studded cast including Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, J.K. Simmons, Lucy Liu, and Bonnie Hunt, the 2024 film Red One didn’t make money in theaters. It earned $186 million worldwide, but cost $250 million to produce. The movie follows Callum Drift (Johnson), head of security at the North Pole, and hacker Jack O’Malley (Evans) as they team up to rescue a kidnapped Santa Claus (Simmons).
Movie critics generally disliked the film, giving it a 30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 186 reviews. However, audiences seem to enjoy it much more, with an 89% approval rating based on over 5,000 fan reviews.
After appearing in Red One, Dwayne Johnson starred in Disney’s Zootopia 2 and another unnamed film. He also reprised his role as Maui in Moana 2 in 2024. Recently, The Smashing Machine was released in theaters on October 3rd and has received positive reviews. It’s currently “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics giving it a 71% rating and audiences a 74% rating.
Dwayne Johnson Nets His First Golden Globe Nomination
I’m so excited for The Smashing Machine to finally come out! I just heard it’s hitting HBO Max on January 23, 2026. It’s a biopic about Mark Kerr, the two-time UFC heavyweight champ, and Zac Efron is playing him, which is awesome! Emily Blunt is playing his wife, Don Staples, and the cast is seriously impressive – Bas Rutten, Lyndsey Gavin, and even Oleksandr Usyk are all in it. I’ve been waiting for this one!
Despite getting excellent reviews, the film The Smashing Machine wasn’t financially successful, making only $21 million globally on a $50 million budget. It also represented a different kind of role for Johnson.
As a critic, I’ve seen a lot of films, and Dwayne Johnson recently shared something that really resonated with me. He admitted you can’t predict how a movie will do at the box office, but you can control how fully you commit to the role. He said he’ll always chase that chance to truly lose himself in a character, and honestly, he went on to say this particular film was life-changing for him. It’s a powerful statement, and one that speaks to the dedication so many actors bring to their craft.
