As a film enthusiast who has spent countless winters huddled in cinemas, I must confess that ‘Red One‘ is a spectacle that leaves me feeling like I’ve just unwrapped a box of disappointing socks on Christmas morning. With a cast as star-studded as a frosty night sky, the movie promises to be an exhilarating ride, but alas, it falls short of the magic and wonder we all crave during the holiday season.
Since we’re in early November, you might think it’s already Christmas time, or at least retailers seem to believe so, as they’ve started displaying Christmas merchandise on their shelves, a tradition that often begins the day after Easter. This year’s major holiday movie release is ‘Red One’, starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans.
In simpler terms, Callum Drift, portrayed by J.K. Simmons, is the blunt-headed head of Santa Claus’ personal security, known as Johnson. With only a few days left until Christmas (December 25th), this is his final year on the job due to a moral dilemma; the number of children on the ‘naughty list’ has risen by 20% and keeps growing. However, Santa gets kidnapped, and indirectly, it’s the work of Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans), a tech-savvy thief who stole a device for some villains led by Gryla (Kiernan Shipka). Unbeknownst to him, Jack plays a part in this, and he is reluctantly pulled into teaming up with Cal to find and rescue Santa, all while saving Christmas from a series of action-packed CGI sequences.
This movie features Dwayne Johnson and Sebastian Stan in an action-packed, tech-heavy buddy comedy. Johnson takes on the serious role while Stan plays the witty, smirking sidekick. Despite their initial differences, they develop a bond and traverse the globe, facing numerous challenges along the way. One of these challenges is a fight on a beach involving a character named Cal, who can change his height with an amulet that also enlarges objects. This year, it seems, everyone wants this amulet! The CGI in the movie is quite impressive, especially the reindeer, now referred to as “ladies” – perhaps Rudolph and his friends have decided they identify as such. Red One attempts to tackle various themes – absent fathers, intense action sequences, traditional Christmas imagery – but ultimately, it’s forgettable and unlikely to become a holiday favorite.
