After a lengthy journey, Red Sonja is making her way back to the silver screen. Following numerous delays over the years, the moment has finally come for Red Sonja’s cinematic comeback. Today, Samuel Goldwyn Films unveiled the initial trailer for Red Sonja, as showcased in the video below. The footage showcases both the violent and magical aspects from the comics, faithfully representing the source material. In this new adaptation, Matilda Lutz will embody Red Sonja, with a host of other characters and adversaries appearing throughout the film, but make no mistake – Red Sonja is undoubtedly the main attraction. For your viewing pleasure, you can watch the full trailer in the video below.
The movie opens with Red Sonja avenging a massacre, and despite being captured, it’s evident no obstacle will deter her from retribution. In the trailer, Red Sonja is shown battling numerous soldiers in her distinctive chainmail bikini, which is humorously referenced at the end of the clip. However, this appears to be one of the rare instances of humor in this initial sneak peek.
At various instances, Red Sonja engages additional guards and soldiers, and even battles against one of Draygan’s formidable allies in combat. The risk level escalates significantly when Red Sonja confronts a colossal Cyclops, yet she appears undaunted by the task ahead.
In 1985, the original movie featuring this character premiered with Brigitte Nielsen in the starring role. The character had another opportunity when Robert Rodriguez attempted to reboot the franchise in 2008; however, Rose McGowan was initially chosen for the main part, though the venture ultimately didn’t come to fruition.
As a devoted fan, I’ve eagerly awaited the big-screen adaptation of Red Sonja for quite some time. After a brief hiatus following the 2011 Conan the Barbarian reboot, there were whispers of a Red Sonja film on the horizon around the same period, but alas, it never materialized – perhaps not helped by the modest box office success of that particular Conan film.
Fast forward to 2018, I read about Bryan Singer working on a Red Sonja project, but regrettably, that too seemed destined for the dustbin of unrealized projects.
However, my spirits were lifted in 2021 when news broke that the film was back on track, and now, we’re finally moving towards its release later this year!
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I can’t wait to see “Red Sonja” directed by M.J. Bassett! This action-packed film boasts an impressive cast including Matilda Lutz, Martyn Ford, Robert Sheehan, Wallis Day, Michael Bisping, Philip Winchester, Trevor Eve, Luca Pasqualino, and Rhona Mitra. The official synopsis promises a thrilling journey: “Having been captured, chained, and forced to fight for survival, Red Sonja must navigate the blood-drenched arenas of a tyrant’s realm, rallying an army of outcasts to reclaim her freedom and bring down Dragan and his cruel consort, Dark Annisia.
On August 15th, you’ll find “Red Sonja” playing in movie theaters, and starting August 29th, it will be available for digital viewing as well.
