As a lifelong movie fan, I always find it fascinating to hear about how stars first started out. This weekend, Reese Witherspoon shared a really touching story at her Hello Sunshine conference. She talked about being a young, aspiring actress trying to get her foot in the door, and how one of her very first auditions was actually for a role opposite Diane Keaton. It was especially poignant because she also took a moment to acknowledge Keaton’s recent passing – a really lovely tribute from one actress to another.
Diane was a huge influence on me early in my career. I was just 15, new to the industry and from Nashville, Tennessee, so I didn’t know anyone. She was one of the first people to mentor me, and I auditioned for her when I was just starting out – it was only my second or third audition ever.
The thought of auditioning for a massive star like Diane Keaton seems intimidating enough, but I can’t even imagine doing it as a teenager. It goes without saying that Reese Witherspoon found herself in a prime position to make an impression at that point in her career. As Witherspoon went on to explain (as can be seen on Instagram), she did manage to make an impression when she finally had the opportunity to speak with Keaton personally. What ultimately played out was a funny exchange between the two actresses:
Afterward, she looked at me, and I put on a strong Southern accent, trying to play the part of a sweet Southern girl. She asked me who I was, and I told her, “I’m Reese Witherspoon, from Nashville, Tennessee.” She questioned if I was faking the accent, and I assured her I wasn’t, reiterating that I was from Nashville and really wanted to be in her movie. She immediately said, “You’re hired! I don’t know who you are, but I’m thrilled to have you – you’re hired for today, tomorrow, and the next day!”
Diane Keaton was incredibly warm and supportive, and I appreciated that she lifted Reese Witherspoon up instead of criticizing her. It was also amusing to learn that Keaton, being from California, was a little surprised by Witherspoon’s Southern accent. Despite those differences, the two actresses became very close while filming Keaton’s movie, *Wildflower*, and Witherspoon often talked about how much Keaton’s advice meant to her.
I starred in a film called Wildflower, which Diane Keaton directed, alongside Patricia Arquette. Filming that summer was really special for me. Diane took me aside and gave me some acting advice – she told me to stand up straight and focus on my posture, saying it was important for an actress. I remember being very respectful and saying, ‘Yes, Ms. Keaton!’
Reese Witherspoon has become a hugely successful and award-winning actress, and I believe she learned a lot from working with Diane Keaton. It’s wonderful that she acknowledges her influences, like she did after the passing of Jane Goodall.
