“Refreshing” US sci-fi thriller with Lord of the Rings legend finally finds a UK home on Netflix

The US show Moonhaven, which first came out on AMC+ in 2022, is now available to watch in the UK, three years after its original release.

A new 6-episode series featuring Emma McDonald, Dominic Monaghan, Amara Karan, Ayelet Zurer, Joe Manganiello, Kadeem Hardison, and Yazzmin Newell is now streaming on Netflix in the UK.

Moonhaven, created by Peter Ocko (known for Elementary), was initially picked up for another season, but the renewal was later cancelled. This decision was apparently made to reduce spending.

This sci-fi series takes place 100 years from now and follows Bella Sway, a pilot and smuggler who gets stranded on Moonhaven after being falsely accused of a crime. Moonhaven is a 500-square-mile utopian colony built on the moon, intended to solve the problems threatening life on Earth.

Bella, a doubter living in the seemingly perfect world of Moonhaven, finds herself caught up in a plot to control the AI that powers its wonders. She joins forces with a local detective, Paul Serno, to prevent those who threaten Earth’s final chance for survival from succeeding – before it’s too late.

Tomm Schultz, played by Manganiello, is a former soldier with a thoughtful side. He works closely with the main Earth diplomat stationed on the moon. However, the diplomat’s goals shift dramatically after he’s given a powerful drug originating from the moon that changes his mind.

When the series first came out, critics gave it mostly mixed to positive reviews, with a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, viewers were less impressed, giving it a positive rating of only 53%.

Reviews were mixed, but generally positive. TIME magazine described the work as refreshing and clever, though a bit frivolous. The Hollywood Reporter noted it occasionally aimed for intense suspense without fully achieving it, but praised its frequent moments of unique and imaginative creativity.
